Save energy – upgrade to AMR

Save energy – upgrade to AMR

If your properties have old-style manual meters, you’re probably using more electricity than you should be. A good way to check is with the ‘last night question’.

Ask yourself: “How much electricity did we use last night when our building was closed? Was it the absolute minimum?”

If you don’t have AMR meters, chances are you can’t say either way. That’s because manual meters don’t help you see when and how much electricity is being used in your buildings.

AMR meters, on the other hand, measure your electricity use throughout each day. Every half hour they can send this data to online energy monitoring systems like Energy View so you can easily spot patterns in your electricity use.

It’s no wonder we’re helping more organisations with large property portfolios upgrade to AMR meters. It’s a great step towards hitting your energy efficiency targets.

Improve your bills - upgrade to AMR

One of the drawbacks of old-style manual meters is they have to be read by a person. Whether that’s you or someone representing your meter operator, arranging meter readings is a hassle. Also if meters aren’t read frequently, your bills may have to be estimated.

AMR meters solve all that very simply. If they can pick up a mobile signal, they automatically read how much electricity you’re using and send us that data every month. So we have everything we need to work out your bills with more accuracy and you have better control of your electricity budget.

AMR vs Smart - what’s the difference?

AMR vs Smart

Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meters are the first generation of smarter meters. They use a one-way communication link to send detailed information about your electricity use to your meter operator. We call them ‘smarter’ and not ‘smart’ because truly smart meters will be able to receive information – like new tariffs – as well as sending it, opening up a new range of energy management benefits.

Is your meter compliant?

Since April 2014, all commercial properties that use enough electricity to receive monthly bills have been legally required to use Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meters instead of old-style manual meters.

Here’s how to check if this applies to you, whether you’re compliant and what to do if you need to upgrade.

Does this apply to me?

  1. Find the supply number on your electricity bill. It’s normally at the bottom and starts with a big S.
  2. If it shows 05, 06, 07 or 08 in the top left box next to the big S, then you need to comply with this rule.

Am I compliant?

  1. Check your electricity bill to see if there is an AMR charge listed – if there is you are already compliant.
  2. If there isn’t one, you might still have an AMR meter paid for through a separate contract that your organisation made directly with a meter operator. That would be invoiced separately and not shown on your EDF Energy electricity bill.
  3. If you’re still unsure, call your customer service advisor using the number at the top of your bill. They’ll tell you for definite.

I need an upgrade

If you do need an AMR meter, you have two choices. Do it all with us, or also use a separate meter operator. But either way, you’ll need to get in touch with us so we can start the meter exchange process.
