Inspire is Hinkley Point C’s education programme. Through a range of innovative activities across Somerset, we will help prepare young people to take advantage of the huge opportunities that the construction and operation of HPC will bring.
By working with young people of all ages, encouraging them to explore the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics - known as STEM subjects, we hope that they will be inspired to enter one of the many future STEM jobs that will be available - at EDF Energy and beyond.
Hinkley Point Discovery brings young people and their teachers closer to the Hinkley Point B power station and the Hinkley Point C construction site at Hinkley’s very own nature reserve. It consists of interactive, hands-on experiences inside and outside of the classroom, where they can enjoy pond-dipping, bug-hunting, biodiversity lessons, and bird and butterfly spotting. We provide all the equipment and equip teachers from the schools involved to run the lessons, so each session can be tailored to fit in with their curricula and complement what the young people are learning about.
Our Energy Mix presentation and materials can be tailored to both upper primary and lower secondary pupils. Students will learn about the energy gap that the UK is potentially facing, and why no single energy source holds the solution. It explains the need for a diverse energy mix and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of energy source, while showing how being more energy-efficient at home and in business is key. Finally, it introduces students to the importance of distribution and transmission infrastructure.
This is usually presented at our Visitor Centre, but we can also arrange for it to be delivered at your school. To arrange a presentation, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can find out about our nuclear power station operations, how we generate electricity and more about EDF Energy on one of our visitor tours. Pre-arrange your group tour and come on site to explore electricity – seeing first hand how we use nuclear power to provide low carbon electricity for the UK.
Alongside our individual Inspire activities, events and sponsorships around the region, we offer programmes that are more progressive and development-based.

The Year 8 Involve Programme
The ‘Involve’ programme consists of a number of activities to engage Year 8’s in STEM learning and to gain a greater understanding of the future career opportunities in Construction, Engineering, Nuclear and within EDF Energy. The journey starts with a Careers Assembly, followed by a Nuclear STEM Day. A number of young people will then have the opportunity to participate in a Low Carbon Challenge Day or even the Low Carbon Residential at Exeter University.
The core aims are to develop some invaluable life skills such as communication and presentation, have an insight into the opportunities that studying STEM subjects can provide, experience engineering related challenges and gain an appreciation of the nuclear industry.

The Year 9 Pathways Programme
This programme leads directly on from the Year 8 Involve programme. It gives students a greater insight into low-carbon energy, with a particular emphasis on nuclear energy. A wide range of training is provided that will help students to present confidently, communicate and debate their ideas on our energy future. Students also have the the opportunity to experience hands-on engineering-related challenges.
The ‘Pathways’ programme starts with a Careers Assembly for the whole year group then a Nuclear STEM workshop. A number of young people will then have the opportunity to participant in an Aspiration Day, where they may gain an insight into university life or take part in an engineering challenge. Finally, at a presentation day at the end of the year, the Year 9 students demonstrate the skills they haved learned to Year 8 pupils
