What’s new?

Smart meters are able to record more information than current electricity meters. In fact, they’re able to capture and store data about your energy use for every half hour.

Smart meters also enable us, as your energy supplier, to collect this information directly from the smart meter by means of remote connection (meaning that we’ll no longer need to request regular meter readings from you).

The key facts

  • Smart meters should be installed in every property in Britain between now and 2020. We'll  tell you when we plan to install yours
  • The government is overseeing the smart meter rollout and has put rules in place to protect  the data collected from your meter
  • As we would with a traditional meter, in order to service your account, we will hold some of your personal details on our systems

The choices you can make

You can choose how much information you share with us and how regularly we’re able to take these remote meter reads:

  • The more reads you share with us, the better we can help you to understand your consumption and consider tariffs and ser vices that may help you cut down or save money
  • If you do not state any preference we’ll collect your data from your smart meter on a monthly basis; but if you're happy for us to take these more regularly (for each half-hour or each day) you can provide us with your consent to do so (we will also ask you about your preference when you call to book your installation appointment)
  • You can change your preference at any time by calling us on 0800 068 5918(1)
  • You can say whether or not you’re happy for us to share details about your energy use with other organisations. As an example, we may share your personal information with research agencies - who may contact you to see how you are getting on with your smart meter on our behalf
  • You can choose whether or not we are able to use your meter data to promote our products to you. For example, you provide consent for us to send you marketing about our new tariffs and other offers that could help you save energy and money based on your consumption patterns
  • You can choose which way you’d prefer to access information about your energy use and decide how to maximise the benefits from it
  • You’re able to let us know if you change your mind about any of these preferences at any time
