Meet James, he lives in Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex and is a smart meter customer service advisor. He started his EDF Energy career 11 years ago helping customers read their meters.Now he’s in the Residential Customer Services team.

Installing your smart meter

Meet Kyla, she started as an EDF Energy apprentice in 2014 and is now a Smart Meter Installer. She loves being able to communicate with all the different people she meets and enjoys having a hands-on job where she can be sociable.

Energy efficiency aftercare

Meet Nigel, he’s an Energy Efficiency Adviser who lives in Teignmouth, South Devon. He helps educate people on energy efficiency and has specialist knowledge of all renewable technology and efficiency measures.

What’s the best thing about smart meters?

The fact you get accurate bills, they take the hassle out of reading your meter and they help us all become more energy efficient.

What’s your favourite hobby?

Football and sports. I play football for a local team, I love watching other sports and also going to the gym.

What’s your perfect Saturday?

It’d probably have to be playing or watching a football match then going out for a meal with my other half and family in the evening.

Where’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

Miami Beach.


What’s exciting about being in the Smart Installation Society?

Every day is different. I get to see someone new every day and travel around. Lots of people are excited about smart meters, getting their in-home display and being able to see their energy use in real time. I love being out and about and not stuck in an office!

What’s your normal day at work like?

My typical day as an installer starts the night before. I check where I’m going to be, then in the morning set off to my first installation. I call my customer and let them know I’m on my way, go to their house and fit the new meter. 

What’s your perfect Saturday?

Have a lie-in! I’ll usually hang out with my friends, family and fiancé. Maybe go to the cinema or have a picnic in summer.

What other EDF Energy department would you like to work in for a day?

Blue Lab because I’d like to work on deploying new products for our customers plus I’d love to play with all the new gadgets! I am working on a range of new ideas for the next innovation challenge.  

What do you like most about your job?

Working with my great colleagues and giving great customer service. I work in the Green Hub so have a lot of specialist knowledge about renewable technology and energy efficiency measures. I help with educating customers and my colleagues.  

What’s your typical weekend like?

Spending weekends with the family and having all kinds of fun!  I’m quite sports orientated and a big football fan. I support Reading FC and play regular football. I also watch my son play for his local U8s team.
