How user testing works

Once you're signed up, we'll send you an email whenever we have a test ready for you to complete. These are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

And if you're not free, don't worry! We'll get back in touch when we have another test ready for you.

Do I need any equipment or expertise?

No, you don't need any technical knowledge, specialist IT skills or experience to take part. There are also no right or wrong answers in the tests.

We simply need your honest opinion about what works and what doesn't.

Common questions

Yes, you need to be at least 18 years old to take part.

There are two types of user testing you could be invited to take part in:

  1. Live conversation - this is an interview with someone on our team and we'll chat with you and get your feedback.
  2. Unmoderated test - this is a self-guided test that you receive instructions for and take in your own time by yourself.

You need an internet-enabled device with a microphone (you can check the technical info if you're unsure).

You can use your mobile for testing, but you'll need to download the UserTesting app first from the App Store or Google Play

You also need a PayPal account so we can pay you for each test you complete.

No - we're looking for a mix of EDF and non-EDF customers to join our testing panel.

As an EDF customer, you might receive a few more invites to take part in tests. For example, when we need feedback on customer user experience.

But remember you get paid for your feedback whether you're a customer or not!

The number of tests you receive will vary. Some months you may get several tests and then fewer at other times.

We choose who to send tests out to depending on what we need feedback on - so the information you provide when signing up is really useful for choosing the right participants for each test.

Test places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you want to take part in a test you should respond quickly and don't worry you don't need to take the test instantly.

All panellists are paid through PayPal. UserTesting recommends that you use a verified personal PayPal account. A typical test payment is $10 - we'll tell you how much the test pays each time we invite you to one.

Don't worry that you'll be paid in dollars. UserTesting is an American company but when you receive your funds in Paypal you'll be able to convert the funds into your local currency. The money usually lands in your account 7 days after you complete a test. Occasionally, PayPal can have delays of 24-48 hours on payments.

Don't worry. You don't have to take every test we invite you to join, it's up to you how often you participate. Just avoid thinking about it for too long, as tests are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you're invited to take part in a test, there'll be a link in the email to click on to give feedback.

If you haven't yet heard from us, it's probably because we don't have relevant test for you at the moment.

No - as long as you've got a laptop, tablet or phone with a microphone (nearly all do), you won't need anything else.

No specialist technical knowledge or experience is needed. All tests are done online or the UserTesting app.

Both EDF and UserTesting take the security and privacy of your data very seriously.

When you sign up to join our panel, we'll never use your information for anything other than contacting you about the panel and to take part in tests.

Similarly, if we want you to test a feature of our app or MyAccount (the customer section of our website) we'll never use your actual account details, but give you dummy account details to use instead.

Any test invites you receive, as part of our testing panel, will come from support@usertesting.com

We will never ask you to transfer any money or share any personal information or account details with us.

If you're worried or unsure about an email you've received, please check it with us before responding.
