Coronavirus – supporting the community

Hinkley Point C and EDF are part of the community in Somerset and the South West and we are offering help where we can during the Coronavirus crisis. We are making sure that we do that in a way that keeps everyone safe, whether volunteering or supplying equipment.

We have already been able to provide the NHS and emergency services with some of the protective equipment they need.  We have helped Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue with 1,000 facemasks. Hinkley Point C and B have given  goggles and eye protectors to Musgrove Hospital in Taunton. As we get more requests we will do what we can to help. Today we are offering 5,000 more face masks to the NHS and emergency services, with more to come as new supplies arrive.

Our team has also been at Weston Hospital in Weston super Mare, using 1,000 tonnes of stone to help construct extra facilities which may be needed if the virus spreads further.

I have said that we continue to support the local suppliers and workers who came together to supply our project. Somerset Larder has worked with the food charity Fareshare to prepare meals to be sent to vulnerable people in the local area. They are also feeding medical staff working long hours at community hospitals and medical facilities.

Hinkley Point C is also recruiting volunteers from its staff who are now working from home and is working with a charity partner to use the volunteers to support care homes and isolated elderly people.

Meanwhile EDF colleagues have joined forces with Boots to deliver medicine. Our supply business continues to provide the UK’s hospitals with electricity. Our power stations, including Hinkley Point B, continue to power the whole nation.

I live in this community – as do many of my colleagues. We will use our strong local relationships to find ways to help the project be a force for good.
