Hinkley Point C project receives prestigious RoSPA Gold Medal

EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C project has been recognised for the team’s commitment to health and safety at the 2017 Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) awards.

The project received a prestigious Gold Medal to mark five consecutive years of achievement in RoSPA’s gold award health and safety scheme. 

The medal demonstrates that the Hinkley Point C site has well developed occupational health and safety management systems, a positive safety culture and good risk control.

Iain Graham, Head of Site Safety & Assurance at Hinkley Point C, said: “This award is a fantastic achievement and recognises the tremendous hard work that everyone puts into managing and improving health and safety.

“External assessment of this type is an opportunity to show our site to others and invite feedback.

“I’m proud that we’ve attained a Gold Medal in our fifth year of participation, during what has been an exceptionally busy year for the project.” 

Hinkley Point C currently has 1,600 workers at the construction site, with good progress being made since the project received final approval from the Government last September. Several South West firms are working at the site, including providing catering, transport, groundworks and site infrastructure, having won contracts worth over £465 million.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s Head of Awards and Events, said: “The RoSPA awards are the most prestigious in the world of occupational health and safety and are held in high regard around the world.

“Winning an award demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record and achieving the standard required is no mean feat.”

The RoSPA awards date back 61 years and recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work. They are open to organisations from across the UK and overseas and judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems.
