Turning key moments into meaningful action: how EDF Small Business and Wadi are helping small businesses save energy
Helping customers when it matters most
At EDF we know that rising energy costs can put real pressure on small businesses. That’s why we’ve continued working with Wadi to help customers understand what they’re spending and where they could save.
Since launch, more than 450 UK businesses across 18 industries have used Wadi to explore their energy costs. The businesses completing an Energy Check represent more than £1.5 million in annual energy spent, spanning everything from hotels and care homes to warehouses and retailers
Through our latest campaign, we’ve been offering customers access to the Wadi Energy Check when they’re most likely to find it useful.
Support when it matters most
Our campaign focused on three key customer moments when energy costs are likely to be on customer’s mind.
Direct Debit increase
When customers receive an increase in their Direct Debit, they're often looking for ways to reduce their energy costs and understand what’s driving the change.
Debt and payment support
Customers experiencing financial pressures or payment difficulties need support that is relevant, timely and easy to understand – small reductions in energy use could help.
Contract renewal
Renewal isn’t only about choosing the right tariff. It’s also a chance to look at how the business uses energy and decide what to do next. It provides a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the wider value EDF can offer to customers beyond energy supply.
At each of these moments, the Energy Check gives customers a simple way to understand their energy spend and decide what to do next.
How is Wadi helping these key moments?
The Wadi Energy Check asks customers a few simple questions about their business, its size and its energy spend.
From there, they can:
- See how their energy spend compares with others in their industry
- Find out where they may be using more energy than they need to
- Get practical ways to use less energy
- Decide which areas to focus on first
The simplicity of the experience has been a key driver of engagement. There are no lengthy forms and customers don’t need to be energy experts. The aim is to make energy spend easier to understand and give each business a clear place to start.
What the Energy Checks have found
Based on the energy spend entered, businesses could save around 15% of their annual energy costs.
That works out at an average potential saving of more than £800 a year for each business
The figures were even higher in some industries. Restaurants and cafés could save an average of £1,594 a year, while hotels had the highest average at £1,875 a year.
More than supplying energy
Hundreds of small businesses now have a clearer view of their energy costs and where they can save. That’s the real value of EDF and Wadi working together: support that goes beyond supplying energy and makes a difference to the businesses we support.
