Utilita and EDF expand partnership to deliver battery management services for business customers

By EDF | Posted May 05, 2026

Utilita and EDF have expanded their long standing partnership with a new agreement to deliver battery management services for Utilita’s business customers. This builds on two major milestones already achieved between the companies: EDF’s exclusive role in providing wholesale market services to Utilita, and the successful transfer of over 40,000 credit customers to EDF.

Under the agreement, EDF will help business customers manage and optimise their on-site batteries, reducing energy bills, limiting exposure to peak time prices, and enabling participation in national and local flexibility markets. These markets are expected to play a central role in the energy transition, with studies suggesting flexibility could save the UK energy system up to £10 billion per year by 2050. This is becoming increasingly important as businesses face more volatile wholesale prices and rising network charges during periods of high demand.

EDF is the largest battery optimiser in Great Britain, with 1.8GW of battery capacity under management. The partnership draws on this market leading expertise to help Utilita’s business customers unlock greater value from their energy assets.

Building on the success of its multi award winning in‑front‑of‑the‑meter (IFM) battery optimisation product, EDF is now expanding its behind‑the‑meter (BTM) offering. Delivered through its PowerShift virtual power plant (VPP), the platform already manages tens of thousands of residential and small business assets, providing real time optimisation and access to revenue generating flexibility services.

Stuart Fenner, Commercial Director of Business & Wholesale Services at EDF, said:
“This agreement represents another important step in our growing relationship with Utilita and supports our ambition to help electrify Britain. Our IFM battery optimisation portfolio has been recognised across the industry for its performance, and we are now applying that experience as we scale our BTM offer through PowerShift. We’re excited to support Utilita’s business customers in unlocking new value from their energy assets.”

George Walters, Chief Commercial Officer at Utilita, added:
“Our partnership with EDF continues to evolve in ways that deliver real value for our business customers. By combining Utilita’s proven customer expertise with EDF’s optimisation capabilities, we can unlock new opportunities for businesses looking to lower their energy bills and reduce their environmental impact.”

The agreement reflects both organisations’ commitment to supporting UK businesses in the transition to a smarter, more flexible and more resilient energy future.
