Torness pulls annual “Christmas Cracker”
More than 110 pupils from three primary schools swapped the classroom for a hands-on experience at Torness power station as part its annual festive ‘Christmas Cracker’ event.
The pupils from Letham Mains Primary, Coldstream Primary and Berwick Middle School were given a unique insight into life at the station and the wide variety of roles that keep it running.
As well as enjoying a guided tour, the pupils got up close to the on-site fire engine and took part in fire extinguisher training. They also suited up in protective clothing, met officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and learned essential first aid techniques from the occupational health team.
While nearly all primary pupils study Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects, only a small fraction continue into STEM careers. Events like this are designed to encourage pupils to continue studying STEM subjects and representatives from almost every department at the station gave time to inspire the next generation.
Faith Scott, Visitor Centre Coordinator, said: “The Christmas Cracker event is one of the highlights of our calendar. It is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to see how the station operates and discover the range of careers available on site.”
Chloe Johnston, Letham Mains teacher, said: “The pupils voted the day 10 out of 10, and said it was the best trip they have ever been on.”
