These innovations reinforce PowerShift's position as the ultimate tool for optimising flexible assets, delivering asset performance and value.
Cloud-based Data Sharing Solution
At EDF, we understand that seamless communication and data sharing are critical for maximising the value of your assets. That’s why we’re proud to introduce our new Cloud-based data-sharing solution, designed to deliver a modern, streamlined experience.
Traditional methods of data sharing often lack the agility and scalability required for modern energy management. Our Cloud-based solution overcomes these limitations by providing real-time, secure, and flexible data access. With this approach, customers can make faster, more informed decisions, significantly enhancing operational efficiency.
What’s New?
- Enhanced Flexibility: A user-friendly interface that simplifies data sharing and improves accessibility.
- Operational Efficiency: A seamless, scalable platform that eliminates outdated processes.
- Future-Ready: While the first version supports customers with an AWS Cloud-based- infrastructure, future updates will expand compatibility to other platforms and access methods.
We invite PowerShift customers to join us as early adopters of this innovative solution. Your feedback will be instrumental in refining the solution and shaping future iterations. Together, we can develop a data-sharing experience that meets your needs and drives success in this dynamic energy market.
NESO Enhanced Auction Capability – Dynamic Tendering Capability
We have long recognised that maximising the value of flexible assets requires taking advantage of all the available routes to market. At the Day-ahead stage is where a high proportion of value can be secured, either via wholesale trading or locking-in ancillary service contracts, with a range of response and reserve services now procured by NESO every day.
Our Day-ahead optimisation function blends together the insight of our expert analysts with the speed and accuracy of our in-house algorithms to identify the optimal strategy for each individual asset. Consequently we were ready on Day 1 of the NESO Single Market Platform go-live in Q4 2023, immediately taking full advantage of new features and functionality to tailor our tendering strategies on an asset-by-asset basis, helping us to maintain our position as one of the top optimisers in the industry.
Algorithmic Battery BM Pricing
As the size of our battery portfolio under optimisation has grown, and with it the complexity of different routes to market and NESO services, we recognised the need and the opportunity to push the BM pricing to the next level of automation. Consequently, this year we specified and built a highly complex BM pricing algorithm that incorporates hundreds of variables unique to each battery asset.
Traders still play a crucial part in the process by constantly feeding live updates of their views around market and system imbalance prices. Additionally, we are continuously monitoring the market and the value of different services to adapt our pricing as conditions change. This ensures that the BM prices provided to NESO always reflect the costs and risks of each battery asset, guaranteeing that NESO can take BM actions knowing they represent fair value for consumers and asset owners alike.
Customer Asset Performance Benchmarking
As part of our regular optimisation process, we continually compare our performance with that of our competitors. To facilitate this process, we developed our own in-house competitor report, which utilises publicly available market and industry information alongside economic dispatch assumptions. The result is an assessment of GB-wide BESS asset-by-asset earnings.
This trusted in-house benchmarking process drives us to deliver maximum value and offers our customers a guarantee of high-quality performance.
Day-ahead Balancing Mechanism Assessment
With the emergence of Balancing and Quick Reserve, and with NESO committing to reducing battery BM skip rates, the BM is expected to play a more substantial role in the BESS revenue stack. As a participant in NESO-led working groups, we’ve been actively involved in shaping the future of BESS utilisation within a net-zero transmission system.
To prepare for this shift, we’ve enhanced our forecasting capabilities to assess BM opportunities and value at the Day-ahead stage. Our advanced modelling incorporates market fundamentals such as regional wind output, interconnector flows, and forecast demand. This enables us to optimise pricing strategies for each asset, ensuring they are always available to NESO when needed most.
Balancing Reserve and Quick Reserve
We adapted PowerShift to participate in the Balancing Reserve service right from its launch on 12th March 2024. Our commitment is to consistently deliver new services to our customers as soon as they become available. We invested in our platform to ensure we were ready for Quick Reserve, enabling us to deliver from Day 1 on 3rd December 2024.
Co-located Solar and Battery
Co-location technology which involves combining renewable energy generation (such as solar or wind) with battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the same site (and often constrained by export limits) is rapidly advancing and playing a crucial role in the global energy transition. We are actively participating in the market to develop and implement technology within our portfolio.
We are looking forward to our first co-located site going live early in 2025, that combines solar PV with battery storage, the first of many. Our system incorporates precise solar volume forecasting, seamless data transfer and processing, and accurate battery optimisation capabilities. The battery will flex up or down real-time around solar generation. The system will help customers manage their co-located assets within regulatory and site level requirements while fully utilising the assets and maximising revenue. As the market develops, we are continuously improving our system to prepare our capability to handle more complex co-located scenarios.
Looking ahead
At EDF, we are committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions that empower our customers to thrive in a rapidly evolving energy landscape. Whether it’s the unparalleled optimisation capabilities of PowerShift or the modern flexibility of our Cloud-based data-sharing solution, our goal is to help you unlock the full potential of your assets.
Looking ahead, we are focused on expanding PowerShift’s capabilities even further. This includes integrating new tools to enhance forecasting accuracy, developing additional tendering strategies to capture untapped market value, and leveraging emerging technologies like machine learning to continuously refine asset optimisation. Our roadmap also prioritises collaboration with industry stakeholders, ensuring that PowerShift remains a market leader in flexibility and revenue optimisation.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to innovate and enhance the PowerShift experience.
