Microbusiness and Small Business definitions explained
To make sure we’re providing the right support for our business customers, we need to correctly identify those who qualify as Microbusinesses and Small Businesses. Ofgem, the energy regulator for Great Britain, defines these as follows.
You're a Microbusiness if you have:
- An annual electricity consumption of no more than 100,000 kWh; or
- An annual gas consumption of no more than 293,000 kWh; or
- Fewer than 10 employees (or the full-time equivalent) with an annual turnover or balance sheet total not exceeding £2 million
You're a Small Business if you have:
- Fewer than 50 employees (or full-time equivalent) AND an annual turnover of up to £6.5 million or a balance sheet total of £5 million; or
- An annual electricity consumption of no more than 200,000 kWh; or
- An annual gas consumption of no more than 500,000 kWh.
Remember, classifications can vary by fuel type. For example, you may be classified as a Small Business Consumer for Electricity and as a Micro Business for Gas.
Our commitments
Support Resources: We’ll point Small Business Consumers towards Citizens Advice and Citizens Advice Scotland for further help.
Third-Party Intermediaries (TPIs): As required by Ofgem, we only work with TPIs who belong to an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme for Small Business Consumer Contracts.
Complaints and Support: Small businesses will have access to the Energy Ombudsman, and we’ll record expressions of dissatisfaction as formal complaints under the Consumer Complaints Handling Standards Regulations.
Are you an energy consultant?
Energy consultants (TPIs) need to provide details for all their customers. If a customer has multiple account numbers, just one can be shared with us.
