Reactor 1 shut down - message to local stakeholders

Dear LLC Member,

Reactor 1 shut down

As a member of our community, I believe it is important to keep you updated on any developments at Torness power station. I wanted to make you aware that we took reactor 1 off-line earlier today (14 July).

During testing of the reactor protection system, reactor one automatically shut down. We test this system, which is very sensitive, on a regular basis to prove the reactor will always shut down when required.

As usual, our operations team took prompt action, putting safety first. Cooling to the reactor was maintained at all times and there were no safety, health or environmental impacts.

The reactor will be returned to power as soon as testing is satisfactorily completed.

Torness has generated low carbon electricity, safely, for 26 years. It continues to provide enough electricity to power more than a million homes across Scotland.

If you wish to ask any questions please feel free to ring the station on 01368 873000 and ask for Ashleigh Dickson.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Winkle - Station Director
