Heysham power stations host Science event

The event on Saturday 11 March 10am – 2pm, will be held at the sites’ visitor centre, and will see the university’s stage a number of hands-on experiments and workshops.

Running alongside this, the stations are also hosting a series of talks with leading female engineers and scientists from the power stations.

Last year more than 300 people tried their hand at experiments and activities such as pinball physics, melting ice, 3D printing, and magical salt.

Sarah Marshall visitor centre co-ordinator, said: “The events in previous years have proved very successful. It is important for us to showcase science and engineering, and we are delighted that the university is again supporting us.

“This year we will have some female engineers who will be chatting with the youngsters about their careers.

“We are looking to encourage more young girls to consider a career with us, either through the apprentice or graduate schemes, and so it will be a chance for them to meet some of our team and ask them questions.

“During the day we will have a variety of experiments and also have competitions, prizes and giveaways.

John Munro, station director at Heysham 2 power station, said: "The Visitor Centre does a great job in showing youngsters what we do here at the stations.

“I am delighted that we have such strong links with Lancaster University, and working together at events such as this we will enthuse the engineers and scientists of the future.”

Mica Budd, Lancaster University’s Faculty Student Recruitment and Outreach Officer, said: “The event provides us with a great opportunity to work with EDF Energy to inspire the local community to engage with science.

“We will also showcase some of the fantastic work taking place in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at Lancaster University.”
