The Wurzels come to Taunton to support EDF Energy employees’ charity challenge
A special fundraising performance by Scrumpy and Western Band The Wurzels will be held in Taunton, Somerset, this week, to support a group of EDF Energy employees’ endeavours in raising thousands of pounds for a local charity.
Eight Bridgwater-based employees from the energy firm will embark on a 600-mile sponsored cycle ride this September, travelling from Saint-Malo in France to Mendalu in Spain. The group aim to raise £10,000 in sponsorship for their local RNLI in Burnham-on-Sea, and have organised the event to support their fundraising efforts.
The charity gig will be held this Thursday (June 6) in Taunton’s Holiday Inn on Deane Gate Avenue at 8.00pm. Tickets cost £20 and include a ploughmans supper and a charity auction, with prizes including hotel breaks and tickets to some of the South West’s best attractions, as well as music from ‘Combine Harvester’-famed band The Wurzels.
Stacey McCaul, 25, a Training Specialist at EDF Energy’s Hinkley’s Point C Nuclear New Build project, is one of the group helping to raise money for the RNLI. She said:
“Last year, a group of eight of us carried out a sponsored cycle ride from Lands End in Cornwall to John O’Groats in Scotland and we managed to raise around £30,000 for the British Paralympic Association. It was incredibly hard work, but a fantastic experience and has given us the bug to carry out another charity cycling challenge.
“We chose to support Burnham-on-Sea’s RNLI this year as it’s an incredibly worthy organisation and is local to my place of work at Hinkley Point C. The charity relies solely on voluntary donations, and provides an on-call 24-hour lifeboat search-and-rescue service, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service.
“We hope that local residents come out in force this Thursday to listen to some good music and help us to support this admirable charity.”
Stacey will be joined by colleagues Peter Caunce, Russell Coles, Mark Lewis, Lorraine Burge, Frazer Greenshields, Rob Elliott and Guy Hazlehurst, who are based at the company’s Mallard Court office in Bridgwater, Campus training centre in Cannington as well as Hinkley Point B Power Station. The sporty group will also be joined by five of their friends and family: Stacy Hazelhurst, Steve Burge, Ben Burge, Jessica Lewis and Tom Seal.
The 13-strong team, who have nicknamed themselves the ‘Nuclear New Bikes’, will begin their colossal 600-mile journey on September 6 in Saint-Malo in France and aim to cross the finish line in Mendalu, Spain, within 8 days.
