Work to refurbish Princess Alexandra bridge
WORK is about to start on refurbishing the railway bridge linking higher Heysham to the port and power stations.
Princess Alexandra bridge is just beyond the junction of Moneyclose Lane near the Duke of Rothesay pub and takes traffic and pedestrians to the passenger ferries but also staff to Heysham power stations.
In the next few weeks teams from AMCO Giffen, the main contractors employed by EDF Energy, the stations’ owners, will start work.
Initially work will take place under the bridge to carry out structural and steelwork repairs, replace the bridge bearings and carry out painting works.
Andy Gudgeon, project manager at Heysham 2 power station, is overseeing the work. He said: “This is part of an on-going investment programme by EDF Energy.
“The bridge is the main route in and out of this area and so sees a lot of traffic.
“We have already spoken to our near neighbours and businesses, about the plan of work which will see the bridge repaired and then resurfaced next summer.
“We are determined to keep all disruption to a minimum but there will be times when traffic is running on single lanes.”
The bridge also spans the rail line which links Heysham port to Lancaster railway station.
