Torness tours confirmed as one of East Lothian’s top attractions
Torness power station’s visitor centre has had its five-star Visit Scotland rating confirmed as it prepares to take part in Doors Open Days for the first time.
This is the sixth time the visitor centre and tour of the EDF Energy power station have been given the top rating.
The confirmation came after an assessor praised the “fascinating” tour and the “outstanding tour guide” who was “able to explain everything in a way which we could engage with, answer questions and keep us hanging on her every word.”
The ratings focus on the standard of the welcome, hospitality and service provided and show the standard of customer care visitors should expect.
Station Director Robert Gunn said: “This is a great achievement for the visitor centre and I am very proud of the team who have maintained such a high standard over the past six years.
“Nuclear power plays an important role in our energy infrastructure and in 2018 Torness generated enough low-carbon electricity to power 2.2 million homes. The centre and the tour give people the chance to visit the heart of a working power station and find out exactly how this happens.”
The visitor centre will run extended opening hours over the weekend of 28th and 29th September as it takes part in Doors Open Days for the first time. Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free festival that celebrates heritage and the built environment.
Visitor Centre Coordinator, Faith Scott, said: “We’re delighted to be taking part in Doors Open Days this year, offering more people the chance to find out what goes on inside a working power station. The five-star rating means those coming along can be assured of great visit.
“The guides at the visitor centre are really enthusiastic about their work and we work incredibly hard to ensure every visitor who comes through our door is given a warm welcome and leaves feeling well informed.
Tours are free and we cater for individuals as well as groups so I would encourage anyone who has not visited yet to get in touch and book a tour.”
You can visit Torness power station’s visitor centre Monday- Friday between 9 am and 4 pm. Tours are free and cater for groups and individuals but need to be booked in advance. Weekend and evening tours are available subject to minimum group size of 10 and availability. You can book by calling 01368 873909 or e-mailing tornessvisitorcentre@edf-energy.com.
