Torness team spring into action for Scotland’s largest children’s charity

A team of enthusiastic staff from Torness power station helped Aberlour Options - Borders bring in the spring with a cleaning spree at one of their respite centres.

The group of six from the EDF Energy station spent a day sprucing up bedrooms and clearing the garden at the Aberlour Child Care Trust bungalow in St Boswells.

Aberlour Options – Borders provides a range of outreach support and respite care for children and young people who have learning and physical disabilities in the Scottish Borders.

The charity’s purpose-built bungalow in St Boswells is open 42 weekends of the year and for week-long breaks during the school holidays.

Robert Gunn, Torness Station Director, said: “I am delighted that we’ve been able to support Aberlour. As a large employer it is important that we are able to give something back to the community and Aberlour carries out great work for many children in East Lothian, the Scottish Borders and across Scotland.”

One of the team who helped at with the painting, Ross Mabberley, said: “We had a fantastic day helping at the service. It was time well spent and a real boost to know that the work we were doing is going to benefit the children who use the service.”

Rogan Higginbottom, Service Manager of Aberlour Options – Borders, said: “We were delighted when the EDF team told us they would like to come along and spruce up the house for us. Our young people have already noticed the difference and are loving it. We want our house to feel like a home from home when our young people come to stay so they can relax and enjoy themselves.”

The work was carried out through EDF Energy’s ‘Helping Hands’ scheme which allows staff to take two paid days off a year to help out in the local community or an environmental cause.
