Summer school sponsorship sends young people on a journey of self discovery
A TOTAL OF 48 lucky students have been selected from five comprehensive schools to join forces and participate in the Bassetlaw and Coventry Citizenship Summer School which ran between 4-10 July.
For eight years, EDF Energy has been a key sponsor of this educational and inspirational summer school which is organised by the MP for Bassetlaw, John Mann. The Summer School aims to challenge the aspirations of its participants and to show them what they can achieve with hard work and determination.
Day 1 begins with a ‘Power Day’ which includes a guided tour of West Burton A coal fired power station and presentations on energy generation, a climate change activity followed by a Q&A session. On the Sunday, the group travel down to London, staying in a central youth hostel for five jam-packed days of activity.
As well as organising the Power Day and a visit to the EDF Energy London Eye the company also pays for the group’s accommodation and underground travel whilst they are in London. In total EDF Energy sponsors around £5000.
The schools represented are Serlby Park, Retford Oaks, Portland, Valley, Elizabethan and Lyng Hall (Coventry). Each school conducts its own competitive selection process.
Andy Richardson, Director of Coal Operations at West Burton A and Cottam said: “We’re always proud to sponsor this Summer School and to welcome the group to West Burton A, to talk to them about energy and hear what they have to say too.”
John Mann MP commented:”It is hugely educational for the pupils to see EDF Energy in action. They learn a lot from this invaluable partnership which is now in its eighth year”
