Public consultation begins for EDF Energy gas power station proposals in Nottinghamshire
The company has launched a public consultation for this gas ‘peaking’ power station which would generate 299MW of electricity, enough to power up to 300,000 homes. Peaking power stations are used to provide electricity at times of peak demand and play an important role when wind and solar power are not available.
Local people and stakeholders will be able to see plans and have their say at a series of public exhibitions in September.
In addition, EDF Energy is considering developing proposals for a further small gas peaking plant, West Burton D, which would be capable of generating up to 50MW of electricity.
Both stations would be located on EDF Energy’s land adjacent to West Burton.
West Burton D would be subject to its own planning application, which would be submitted to the local planning authority, Bassetlaw District Council. At the time of submitting an application all stakeholders, including the local community, would be consulted.
Both proposals are at an early stage and should they gain planning permission, remain subject to investment decisions by the company.

The existing coal power stations at West Burton and Cottam have a role to play, providing secure generation until new lower carbon generation is ready to take their place.
“We also have a modern larger gas power station at West Burton and an innovative battery storage project under construction on the site. They are examples of the large scale investments EDF Energy is making to meet the UK’s need for secure, low carbon electricity. The proposed smaller stations would play an important role in meeting the country’s future energy needs.

“It is important to stress that a decision to invest in either of the proposed new gas stations relies on securing the necessary consents and permits and completion of the work needed to demonstrate their feasibility.”
Public exhibitions are being held for proposals for West Burton C at the following times.

About the proposals
The larger of the two stations would be capable of producing up to 299MW of power. Public consultation will form a key part of the planning process and we look forward to meeting with local communities to discuss our proposals in the coming months. We held a public exhibition in July and plan to hold further exhibitions in September. We will write to local people inviting them to the forthcoming exhibitions. The planning application is expected to be submitted during the first three months of 2018 to the Planning Inspectorate for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
