Essex firm Ovivo awarded £27 million contract for Hinkley Point C

By EDF | Posted July 06, 2017

EDF Energy has awarded Essex firm Ovivo UK Limited (‘Ovivo UK’) a £27million contract to supply the largest cooling water intake screening system in the world for Hinkley Point C (‘HPC’).

Through its heritage brand Brackett Green®, Ovivo UK Limited will design and supply a complete cooling water intake screening system, processing more than 191 cubic meters per second of water that will be used for cooling both the electricity generating steam-cycle and the EPR technology used at HPC.

Ovivo UK currently employs close to 100 employees in the United Kingdom and this eight year contract will provide a boost to the UK manufacturing sector. The equipment will be primarily designed at Ovivo’s Colchester office and manufactured at various approved facilities within the United Kingdom. Ovivo UK estimates that up to 80% of the equipment will be manufactured in the UK.

Once installed, the drumscreens will be the largest screens of their type in the world, with a diameter of 27m (88.6 ft.) by a width of 6.84m (22.5 ft.), approximately 30% larger than its closest rival.

Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson, EDF Energy’s Managing Director for New Nuclear Build, said:  “I am delighted that Ovivo UK in Essex has secured the contract for this important piece of work for HPC, it represents another important step in engaging the UK supply chain"

“We are very happy to have been selected by EDF Energy as their sole supplier for the seawater filtration system,” said Marc Barbeau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ovivo Inc. “We have a long association with the United Kingdom’s nuclear power plant industry and we are proud to be given this opportunity to contribute in the building of the next generation of nuclear plants in the country,” added Mr. Barbeau.
