EDF Energy supports Responsible Business Week

EDF Energy, the UK’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, is an associate sponsor of the second annual Responsible Business Week.

Responsible Business Week takes place between 31 March and 4 April 2014 across the UK and is run by the charity Business in the Community (BITC).

Through a series of events, debates and online activity it aims to brings together organisations and thought-leaders from around the world, as they share best practice and develop new ideas on how to build a fairer and more sustainable society.

EDF Energy’s employees will join thousands of people across the country participating in Responsible Business Week, as they join events as speakers and participants.

EDF Energy’s CEO Vincent de Rivaz will host an evening reception at The Barbican Centre in London on Tuesday April 1, where he will give a speech outlining the importance of responsible business leadership in the energy sector, with a focus on climate change and sustainability leadership.

Mr de Rivaz will be joined by Dr Helen Roy, Principle Scientist at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, who will add her perspective on inspiring the next generation of scientists that is needed for a sustainable future.

The energy company will also be showcasing its ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ initiatives on April 1, as well as its award-winning education programme jointhepod.org on April 2, during round-table discussions at the Barbican Centre in London.

In 2013, EDF Energy received a platinum ‘Big Tick’ in Business in the Community’s annual Corporate Responsibility Index, the highest ranking available in BITC’s annual benchmark of responsible business management. The company also received seven additional ‘Big Ticks’ for initiatives such as ‘Inspiring Social Action’ and ‘Environmental Leadership’.

Andrew Brown, EDF Energy’s Brand Sustainability and External Communications Director, said:

“We’re delighted to be an associate partner of this year’s Responsible Business Week. At EDF Energy we’re committed in our efforts to be a leading responsible and sustainable business.

“We’ve engaged more than 10 million schoolchildren on the topics of energy, science and sustainability through our education programme The Pod and have also developed award-winning internal initiatives to embed equality, diversity and inclusion in our workplace. And through programmes such as our ‘Citizen Science’ initiative we’re working hard to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects amongst schoolchildren to address the UK’s growing skills gap in these areas.

"We’re looking forward to taking part in this week’s events to share our ideas and explore practical action that we can undertake to develop our work further.”
