EDF Energy submits evidence to the Weightman Report

By EDF | Posted April 19, 2011

EDF Energy, the UK’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, has made its submission to Dr Mike Weightman, HM Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations, as part of his report on the implications for the UK nuclear industry of the incident at Fukushima.

EDF Energy, and its partner Centrica, welcome the decision by the Secretary of State to commission the independent report by Dr Weightman and are determined to support him as he examines the lessons that can be learnt in the UK from events in Japan.

In a letter to the Chief Inspector which accompanied the submission, EDF Energy Chief Executive Vincent de Rivaz, said: “EDF Energy recognises the importance of a strong and independent nuclear regulator assuring high safety standards that will support an enduring nuclear industry. I can assure you that we are determined to support this requirement and are totally committed to taking an active role in the lessons learnt exercise you have been asked to undertake by the Secretary of State. We believe that your interim and final reports will play an important role in maintaining trust in the high standards of safety to which we in the nuclear industry adhere. I applaud your stated intent to conduct this process in an open and transparent manner. We also support your intent to ensure that the report is consistent with the global approach to this event to ensure that safety will get the broadest review and reassure the public about safe future operation.

The events at Fukushima will have an impact on the way the nuclear industry operates in years to come. EDF Energy is determined to learn all the lessons from this event in Japan.”

Following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, EDF Energy has already completed a number of actions, including an immediate check of back-up facilities, organising refresher training for employees and reviewing our Emergency Plans.

Mr de Rivaz added: “Whilst all our checks have confirmed our belief that our plants conform to the highest possible standards, our commitment to safety means that we can never be complacent. We will do our best to assist Dr Weightman in his work and establish measures to implement his findings.

“EDF Energy is pleased its full submission will be made public at the same time as the interim report as part of the open and transparent process being followed by Dr Weightman.”
