Dungeness B in the spotlight at MPs’ careers fair

Dungeness B’s Careers team were out in force to meet hundreds of would-be energy workers at one of the largest apprenticeship fairs in the South-East.

The second annual Maidstone Apprentice Fair attracted more than 1200 pupils and students from schools and colleges across the county to meet employers to discuss next steps on the career ladder.

The event, held at the Maidstone Leisure Centre at Mote Park, is unique in being co-hosted by four of Kent’s MPs – Helen Grant, Helen Whately, Tracey Crouch and Tom Tugenhat.

The MP’s mingled with the students and took time to engage with more than 30 major employers including Rolls Royce, The Environment Agency, Keir Group, Sir Robert McAlpine, BAE, Bank of England and Lloyds.

The EDF Energy stand manned by Dungeness B was one of the busiest, with a steady stream of visitors enquiring about job opportunities and careers in electricity generation.

Helen Whately, MP for Faversham and Mid Kent thanked the Dungeness team for their input into a “terrific day of opportunity for our young people.”

“We are overwhelmed by the input from major employers like EDF Energy and I think the young people attending this event today have been really engaged. This is an excellent event and gives our young people a good overview of rewarding careers in the region.”

Helen Grant, MP for Maidstone came up with the idea for the fair, and was pleased with how it was developing into a major event on the calendar.

“We think this is one of the biggest apprentice fairs in the region and it is incredible to see so many positive interactions between young people and major employers,” she said.

The event is just one of a number of careers fairs the Dungeness team get involved in.

Gavin Hooper, who works at Dungeness B with apprentices, said the fair was a good opportunity to outline the excellent career opportunities within EDF Energy.

“These type of events are fantastic and we really enjoy engaging with the young people to inspire them to think of a career with us at Dungeness. They are often surprised at the type of careers they could have working on a nuclear power station, and the benefits of choosing a career with us.”
