Hartlepool power station pair walk coast-to-coast for charity
A pair of workers from Hartlepool power station have completed an incredible challenge to raise thousands for charity.
Jack Coombs and Matty Secker took on the famous Coast-to-Coast route from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire, walking an impressive 300km in just 12 days.
The demanding trek took them across some of the UK’s most challenging and scenic landscapes, testing their endurance, determination and resilience along the way.
The pair have raised more than £2,500 for Alzheimer's Society, which is EDF’s corporate charity partner. Since 2024, EDF sites across the UK have raised more than £600,000 for the charity. The funds raised will help support individuals and families affected by dementia, while contributing to vital research and support services.
Maintenance Group Head, Jack Coombs, said of the challenge: “It was a huge challenge, both physically and mentally, and there were some long days and sore legs along the way. But doing it together and knowing we were raising money for such an important cause gave us the motivation to keep putting one foot in front of the other. We also met some great people, which added to the experience. The scenery was incredible and it is an experience we’ll never forget. We are both incredibly proud to have completed the 300km and to have raised more than £2,500 for Alzheimer’s Society. A massive thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored us.”
There are an estimated 982,000 people living with dementia in the UK, with Alzheimer's disease accounting for up to 80% of these cases.
Matty Secker, who is a Technical Advice Engineer, said: “It was a fully enjoyable experience that I would encourage anyone to do, not only for a physical challenge but for a break from the routine and a chance to clear your head. We live in a beautiful country and most people do not choose to see it. Parts of the walk were very challenging, we had a few falls, one snapped pole, a few blisters and three packs of Compeed, but the views, company and characters we met along the way made it an unforgettable challenge, and to raise this much money for a charity close to my heart is an added bonus.”
