What’s a storage heater and what’s it for?

A storage heater is a wall-mounted heater that uses electricity overnight and stores it as heat in clay or ceramic bricks to use the next day. People with storage heaters are on a specific tariff (the most common is Economy 7) and have a two-tariff electricity meter which records the electricity the heaters use at night separately. It’s then billed at a lower off-peak rate.

Why choose a storage heater?

They can save you money - but only if you’re on a tariff that’s specifically for storage heaters. And because modern storage heaters automatically adjust the amount of heat stored overnight by measuring the temperature in the room (or more rarely, outside the house), you can also pay less. That’s because if it’s milder, they store less heat and use less electricity. (For older models you’ll have to adjust this yourself.)
