What is the government's ECO scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme helps people to cut their energy use and costs through home improvements.

All the big energy companies take part, by installing free home insulation and subsidised boilers for eligible customers.More than 2 million British households have benefited from the scheme between January 2013 and May 2019.

The scheme – which replaced the Home Front grant in 2013 – is also known as the ECO Affordable Warmth scheme. You might also see it called ECO3, because we're onto the third version of the scheme.

Who qualifies for the ECO scheme?

You can apply for ECO home improvements through your energy supplier if you meet three qualifying criteria:

  1. You own or privately rent your home.
  2. You get at least one qualifying benefit, such as income support or disability living allowance. See the full list of qualifying benefits.
  3. Your home has an EPC rating of A to E.

Don't qualify for ECO? Homeowners and people living in privately rented homes can apply for other home improvement grants and schemes.

What can you get with the ECO scheme?

The energy companies on the ECO scheme generally offer free loft insulation, free cavity wall insulation and subsidised replacement boilers to eligible customers.

The scheme could save you thousands of pounds on installation costs alone – and cut a few hundred pounds a year off your energy bill through efficiency savings.

And, of course, you and your family will enjoy a a warm, draught-free home.

How much can you save with the ECO scheme?

The savings you make on the ECO3 scheme will depend on the home improvements you're doing; the type of house you live in; and how energy efficient it is in the first place.

The Energy Saving Trust's guides to loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and boiler replacement show the typical costs and savings involved for various types of housing. Our table shows you the figures for a mid-terrace house:

Energy Saving Trust figures

ECO home improvements in numbers

Savings will depend on the type and size of home and the efficiency rating of your old boiler. Figures from Energy Saving Trust.

  • 25% - A quarter of heat is lost through the roof of an uninsulated home

  • £135 - £250 - The amount you can save per yer on your energy bills by insulating your loft

  • 33% - A third of an uninsulated home's heat loss escapes through the walls

  • £85 - £280 - The energy efficiency saving you can make each year by adding cavity wall insulation

  • 55% - Heating accounts for more than half of your total energy bill - so an efficient boiler makes a huge difference

  • £45-£315 - The amount you can save each year in heating costs, by replacing an old gas boiler with a new, A-rated condensing boiler with programmer, room thermostat and thermostatic radiator controls
