What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) has been designed to work alongside  the current ECO scheme, which is known as ECO4. The aim of the scheme is to help install energy efficient measures that can reduce your energy consumption and save you money on your energy bills. The scheme was launched in the Summer of 2023 and will run until March 2026. The government believe the scheme will save households around £310 a year.(1)

How will the Great British Insulation Scheme help lower my bills?

Making our homes more energy efficient is the best way of cutting household energy use and reducing heating bills.

Insulation measures are included in this scheme and will help reduce heat loss and save money on your heating costs. This is because insulation keeps heat from escaping through your loft, windows and walls.

Who's eligible for the Great British Insulation Scheme?

Under the new Great British Insulation Scheme there will be two groups with different eligibility criteria, the general group and the low-income eligibility group. These groups will receive different levels of support.

To be eligible for the general group, you must:

  • live in a home that falls within Council Tax bands A-D in England,
  • live in a home that falls within Council Tax band A-E in Scotland or Wales
  • have an EPC rating of D or below

If you're eligible, you may receive a single insulation measure. This group does not include the private renter sector.

To be eligible for the low-income eligibility group you must:

  • receive means-tested benefits
  • have an EPC rating of D or below

If you're eligible, you may receive a single insulation measure.

Properties with EPC ratings of F and G in the private rented sector will not be eligible for insulation measures. However, properties with EPC ratings of D and E can receive insulation measures, but heating control measures will not be installed.

Cavity wall insulation

Cavity wall insulation is one of the best and most affordable ways to improve your home's energy efficiency.

Insulating the cavity space between the outside and inside wall adds a barrier to stop the cold from coming in and heat from escaping.

FAQs about our Great British Insulation Scheme

You can find out what your home EPC rating is on the EPC registerIf you don't have an EPC, you can arrange to get one through gov.uk.

To find out what council tax band you're in, please visit gov.uk

If a contribution is required, you will be informed when the survey is carried out, and at this point, you'll be free to withdraw your application.

No, we're offering our Great British Insulation Scheme to anyone not just EDF customers.

We are unable to accept applications from social housing tenants. Please contact your social housing provider to discuss the options they have available. If they do provide permission for you to approach an installer directly, you can find a government-endorsed installer by visiting the industry quality assessor, Trustmark.

For customers who privately rent funding may be available provided the tenants meet certain criteria, such as earning a low income and living in a property with an EPC rating that's D or below.

EDF works with a network of fully accredited installers who will assess your property to determine if an installation is needed.

We aim to install single low-cost insulation measures to households rather than multi measures. Alternative types of insulation are more costly and can take longer to install.

Even if you don't qualify for either group's eligibility criteria, you can still opt to pay for insulation. We're here to assist you in arranging to install cavity wall insulation in your home.

There are many reasons why you should insulate your home. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Better health - homes with good insulation are much better for your health
  • Prevent damp - damp housing can cause mould and mildew
  • Get ready for future heating changes - future proof your home! With new technology coming – be ready for anything!
  • Better for the planet - wasting less energy to heat your home, means your carbon emissions will drop

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you may receive cavity wall insulation.

This will be confirmed once your home has been assessed.

We work with a number of installers across the UK. There are a small number of exceptions. These include

- Isle of Wight
- Isles of Scilly
- Scottish Islands and Highlands

Properties with a SAP Band of F and G are not eligible, except in England and Wales, where the following two exceptions apply.

  • For those in General Group PRS properties are not eligible for cavity wall insulation
  • For those in Low Income PRS they are eligible for cavity wall insulation except heating controls
