What’s an installation certificate and how do I get one?

An installation certificate (also called an ‘I-cert’) is a test certificate produced by an electrician after they’ve carried out wiring work. It confirms that they’ve tested the work and it’s safe.

Getting a copy of the certificate

If a private electrician has done the wiring work in your property then they should give you the certificate when they finish (remember that any electrician you use must be qualified to NICEIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) standards).

Why you need a certificate

If you later want EDF Energy to carry out any electrical work, we’ll need to see the installation certificate. It must be dated within 12 months of the appointment date. If the certificate’s over 12 months old, you’ll need to get an up-to-date certificate before we can schedule an appointment.
