The government's Energy Price Guarantee

Energy Price Guarantee update

The Energy Price Guarantee remains valid until 31 March 2024. Customers with prepayment or smart PAYG meters will receive their final discount on their annual statement for this period.

What is the Energy Price Guarantee?

The government introduced the Energy Price Guarantee in response to the high energy prices in 2022. While the guarantee limits what you're charged for your gas or electricity, your bill will still reflect how much energy you use. Anyone who qualified for the discount had the discount automatically applied to their bills between October 2022 and 30 June 2023.

From 1 July 2023, only customers with prepayment and smart Pay As You Go meters will qualify for any Energy Price Guarantee discount on their energy bills. This is because the latest Ofgem price cap rate is lower than the Energy Price Guarantee level. Any discount will be automatically applied. Please use our table below as a guide to what's happening.

How will the Energy Price Guarantee affect me?

From 1 October 2023, customers with prepayment or smart PAYG meters on variable or fixed tariffs will receive the Energy Price Guarantee discount. We're contacting customers affected by these changes to inform them of the situation.

Customers who pay by cash, cheque, or Direct Debit will not receive any EPG discount. This is because the prices under Ofgem's price cap are lower than the government's EPG.

You'll pay the latest Ofgem price cap rates until 31 March 2024 but still get the EPG discount.

This ensures you won't pay more than customers who pay by Direct Debit. The discount will now be applied to your electricity and gas standing charges rather than the unit rates as it was before. You don't have to worry about missing out on this discount, as it's applied automatically.

Smart PAYG

You'll pay your fixed rates until your tariff ends but still get the EPG discount until 31 March 2024.

The discount is now applied to your electricity and gas standing charges rather than the unit rate as it was before.

The discount will be applied as a lump sum rebate to your account and your smart PAYG meter for the tariffs shown here. This will be done by the end of April 2024.

If you're struggling to pay your energy bills

The first and most important thing to do is tell us you can't pay your energy bills. The sooner you talk to us, the quicker we can help.

Call our debt helpline on 0333 009 6992(1). They're open Monday to Friday: 8 am-6 pm. Our team can ensure you get the right support for your needs and circumstances.

Please don't cancel your Direct Debit payments before speaking to us

This could mean that your unit prices will go up, and you could incur a late payment charge. Stopping paying your bills could also mean your credit rating could be affected too.
