What data am I sharing?

Whether we share details about your energy usage with other organisations is up to you. You choose whether we can use your smart meter data for sales and marketing purposes and you can change your mind at any time, just let us know. Read the smart meter data guide.

Will my smart meter cost anything?

Smart meters are installed for free. The smart meter display costs less than £1 a year in electricity to run.

Do I need a broadband connection to use a smart meter?

No. Smart meters transmit information on a separate wireless network, as they contain a GSM SIM card to send data via mobile GSM networks. They don't need a broadband connection to be active in your home.

Can I have a smart meter if I've got a prepayment meter?

At the moment we can’t support smart prepayment meters. But we’ll be letting our prepayment meter customers know when they become available.

Are EDF Energy smart meter installers accredited?

Before installing smart metering systems in your home, our team have received training at a level appropriate to the installation, including from a National Skills Academy for Power accredited provider or equivalent.

Your smart meter data

Smart meters capture and store data about your energy use and you can choose how often they do this – half-hourly, daily or monthly. They also let us collect this information remotely, so we’ll no longer need to ask you for meter reads. We’ll use the data we collect to build up your energy profile. The more regularly we receive reads, the more specific we can be in helping you to become energy efficient. Rest assured we won’t share your energy data with anyone.
