Business moves changes
We know it’s a difficult time for small businesses across the country, so we want to make setting up your energy account easy, that’s why on the 27th of June, changes are coming to our business moves process to make it more consistent, giving you extra peace of mind allowing you to focus on your business.
Ofgem have announced regulation changes for non-domestic suppliers due to scenarios where it had been difficult for new customers to prove they have taken responsibility for a property. These regulation changes require consistency among suppliers, setting obligations in relation to change of tenancies at non-domestic properties.
What is the new process?
Whether you're moving in or out of a business property, we’ve refined the requirements to ensure a smooth and simple transition. By requiring less documents to confirm the change of tenancy, we believe this will result in improved turnarounds, allowing you to take control of your account faster.
When you’re moving into a new property already supplied by EDF you’ll need to provide either a sale of property document or a lease/tenancy agreement, along with a photo of the meter. It is also important to ensure you set up a secure payment method, we recommend paying by direct debit so you never miss a payment.
If you’re moving out of a property supplied by EDF we require a sale of property document or a surrender of lease, depending on the nature of the move, plus a photo of the meter. It is also useful for you to provide us with a forwarding address and the new occupier/landlords information, this way we can ensure everyone gets the communications relating to their period of responsibility.
Watch our helpful videos on the documents we require when your moving into or moving out of a business premises.
Here is a helpful checklist of what you need to ensure the process runs as smooth as possible:
- Date responsibility begins/ends
- Business name
- Final reading
- Forwarding address
- New occupier or landlord contact details
- Legal documents as previously mentioned
The way you contact us remains the same, you will need to contact the business moves team through the dedicated email, BM@edfenergy.com, where we aim to respond to your request within 10 working days.
When may we ask for additional information?
In some cases, you may be asked to provide additional information. This will happen if:
- Multiple change of tenancy’s has previously been actioned at the property
- The previous occupier had an outstanding balance on the account greater than £500
- The previous occupier had more than 6 months left on a fixed contract
When this happens, we will ask for a business rates letter if you are moving into the property or insurance documents if you are moving out of the property. In some instances, we may ask for a solicitor’s letter.
Useful hints and tips when moving property
Now you know what’s needed to get your energy account in order, we thought we’d compile a list of useful hints and tips when moving business property:
- Meter type: check whether your new property uses a traditional, smart or half-hourly meter. Knowing this can help ensure you receive accurate bills and may influence your choice or accessibility to tariffs
- Renewable energy accessibility: if sustainability is a priority for your business, find out whether your new property is compatible with renewable energy options such as solar panels or heat pumps
- Tariff type: consider whether a fixed or variable tariff suits your needs best. Fixed tariffs offer price stability for up to 4 years, while variable tariffs may provide savings if market prices fall
- Direct debit: using a secure payment method such as direct debit means you’ll never miss a payment. With EDF, you’ll also receive up to a 7% discount on your tariff prices
