Your EV smart meter questions answered

Do I need to have a smart meter?

You don't need to have a smart meter to sign up to our single-rate GoElectric EV tariff. You do need to have a smart meter to sign up to one of our EV tariffs with off-peak rates: GoElectric 35 and GoElectric 98.

Your smart meter tells how much electricity you're using during peak and off-peak hours, which is how we work out what your bill should be.

If you're an existing EDF customer you can book a smart meter appointment through MyAccount.

How can I tell which meter I have?

What happens if I don't have a compatible smart meter?

If you don't have a compatible smart meter that we can connect to, we'll sign you up to our GoElectric single-rate tariff. Once you have a smart meter you can switch to a GoElectric tariff with off-peak rates: GoElectric 35 and GoElectric 98.

How long will it take for me to get a smart meter installed?

It takes 2 to 4 weeks to get a smart meter once you've signed up to one of our GoElectric tariffs. Occasionally this may take a little longer, depending on where you live.

If you're an existing EDF customer you can book a smart meter appointment through MyAccount.

Your GoElectric EV tariff questions answered

How much do the GoElectric tariffs cost?

The GoElectric tariff has three structures which are;

GoElectric structureGoElectric structure detail
GoElectric flat-rateSame unit price all day, every day
GoElectric 98Off-peak rates apply between 9 pm and 7 am GMT Mondy to Friday plus all weekend
GoElectric 35Off-peak hours (between 12 am and 5 am GMT) every day.

Once you've signed up to our GoElectric tariff, you lock in your prices across all three structures that are in effect on the day you sign up. This means that even if we launch new versions of this tariff with different prices you're still able to access the prices that you were shown when you got a quote from us.

You can move freely between the tariff structures, during your GoElectric tariff deal date without incurring any additional fees. This will help you find out the best one that works for you.

To find out the rates for each of the structures in your area you can use our online quote tool.

I'm already on the GoElectric flat-rate tariff, how do I move to GoElectric 35 or GoElectric 98?

The GoElectric tariff has three structures: Flat-rate, GoElectric 98, and GoElectric 35.

Once you’ve signed up to GoElectric, you lock in the prices across all 3 structures that are in effect on the day you sign up. This means that even if newer versions of GoElectric are launched which have different prices, this will not affect you. You can move between the structures freely for the duration of your tariff whilst keeping the same end date, and you won’t incur any fees.

You’ll need to be an existing EDF customer with a compatible smart meter. If you’re new to EDF and already have a smart meter, we will let you know once your meter has connected to our systems. If you haven’t got a smart meter we will invite you to book a smart meter appointment.

Once you’re ready to change structures, simply follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.edfenergy.com/electric-cars/go-electric-quote and click the ‘Yes’ button when asked ‘Are you on an electric vehicle tariff with us already’. You will then see the option for changing the structure.
  2. View the structures available, choose which one is best for you and submit your request to change the structure. We’ll then update your meter remotely to the new structure.

How do I get a quote for GoElectric 35 or GoElectric 98 with off-peak rates?

Once you’ve signed up to GoElectric, you lock in the prices across all 3 structures that are in effect on the day you sign up. In order to generate a quote for these tariffs, you need to be an existing EDF customer with a compatible smart meter. If you do not have a smart meter please log in to MyAccount and book a smart meter appointment.

Once you have a compatible smart meter you will be able to view quotes for both GoElectric 35 and 98 using our quoting tool at www.edfenergy.com/electric-cars/go-electric-quote.

However, the unit rates for these tariffs can be found on our electric car tariff page: https://www.edfenergy.com/electric-cars/tariffs.

How much will it cost to fully charge my electric vehicle?

Charging costs depend on the type of electric car you have and the energy tariff you're on.

For example, it could cost you as little as £1.58 to fully charge your electric car during off-peak hours if:

  • you're on our GoElectric 35 tariff with cheaper overnight electricity between 12am and 5am (GMT) daily
  • you have a Nissan Leaf with a 40kW battery
  • That's less than £5 to charge your EV overnight.

Can I also have my gas supply on GoElectric?

Yes, our GoElectric EV tariffs are dual fuel only, this means they’ll cover both your gas and electricity (except where there is no mains gas supply).
