This is the car for you if… you want a top-of-the-range small car that doesn't skimp on big car features.
They say good things come in small packages. And that’s certainly true of the Peugeot e-208 GT. This electric supermini doesn’t feel like a diminutive car. It looks robust and powerful. It can drive up to 217 miles, thanks to its impressively large 50kW battery. And it has the kind of high-spec tech you’d find in a much bigger vehicle.
It’s not surprising the e-208 is already causing ripples through the motoring world. It looks like it means business. There are gloss black wheel arches. Peugeot’s signature ‘three-claw’ LED lights at the front and rear. And heated sports seats for the driver and front passenger. All of which help to make the e-208 feel like a car for grown-ups. But the kind of big kid who gets a buzz still when they get behind the wheel.
There are blue design flourishes to signal the e-208’s electric credentials. Like the monogrammed ‘e’ on the rear. And the reflective Peugeot badge on the chequered front grille.
But Peugeot deliberately isn’t treating the e-208 any differently to its 208. In classic French ‘comme ci, comme ca’ style, it’s up to the driver to choose whether they want it in petrol, diesel or electric version. Peugeot sees its job is to build high-quality and desirable cars. And it’s certainly done that with the distinctive e-208 GT.
Its agile size, nippy acceleration and near-silent engine make the e-208 an ideal city run-around. But to drive this sporty number only in urban areas would deny you the chance to test its impressive range of 217 miles.
Even better, the e-208 comes with fast recharging technology. So you can recover 80% range in 30 minutes at rapid charging points. There are also features to help you extend the range of your battery. Like an Eco Mode. And two levels of engine braking, so you can tap into the power of regenerative braking.
But what about this smart car’s interior? It feels surprisingly spacious and comfortable for a supermini. Then there’s the well-thought out tech. Peugeot’s kitted out the e-208 with its latest generation 3D i-Cockpit. What this means is you get information – like your speed and range – projected on the cluster display in 3D.
There’s also a large 10-inch colour touchscreen you can control with your voice, on-screen or through the steering wheel. Motorheads will particularly like the real-time technical animation that you can display here of the powertrain in motion.
There are lots of practical touches too. The kind of features that all too-often get overlooked, but which make everyday life so much simpler. Like four USB sockets – so everyone can plug their devices in. And wireless charging for your phone.
Plus there’s a whole host of ‘intelligent driving aids’ to keep you safe on the roads. A rear view camera with multiple viewing angles. And fully automated parking assistance. Because the e-208 might be a small car. But that doesn’t mean you have to skimp on the little luxuries in life.
Our three favourite features:
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard with the e-208 GT – because, why not?
- The piano key buttons – for heating and other controls – are a nice design touch that show the attention to detail Peugeot’s put into the latest 208
- And finally, we love the option of being able to view our speed and other vitals as a hologram, rather than having to check the digital instrument panel
You’ll like the Peugeot e-208 GT if you… were already a fan of the Peugeot 208, but want all the benefits of switching to an electric drive.
