This is the car for you if… you’ve been holding out for an electric vehicle that delivers on range and price.
The stylish Kia e-Niro was described as a ‘game-changer’ by What Car?. It didn’t just win the electric vehicle category in its 2019 awards. But snapped up the overall Car of the Year title – beating all other electric, petrol and hybrid vehicles to take the top spot.
And it’s easy to see why. This family-friendly hatchback is capable of up to 283 miles WLTP range, thanks to its 64kWh battery. It’ll get you from York to Cardiff on a single charge. And should quash any fears drivers might have about electric cars conking out before they reach their destination.
The e-Niro 4+ looks reassuringly like its hybrid and petrol equivalents too. There are the same sleek SUV body, integrated headlights and higher seating position.
But Kia’s added some stylish touches to distinguish the e-Niro from its siblings. Look for the subtle blue trim around the front and rear bumpers. These flow into the e-Niro’s sophisticated interior: running along the comfy seats, dashboard and surround.
And it’s the inside of the e-Niro 2 that really sets it apart from its petrol and hybrid equivalents. Without the need for a clunky gearbox, there’s a large centre console and a prominent rotary dial for switching between neutral, parking and drive. It gives the e-Niro a slicker appearance and enables Kia to pack in more handy storage too.
There’s plenty of space to seat five people inside the e-Niro, and a really impressive boot of 451 litres, capable of holding five suitcases. Then there are the advanced driving features and sophisticated touches that make the e-Niro feel like a far more expensive car.
Such as smart cruise control, which matches your speed to the car in front – whether accelerating or slowing down – to maintain a safe distance between the two. Four levels of regenerative braking to extend the range of your battery. And handy parking sensors at the front and rear of the e-Niro.
Despite having a big 64kWh battery, the e-Niro 2 feels light and nimble to drive. There’s instant power as you accelerate – it reaches 60mph in a zippy 7.8 seconds. And the e-Niro feels like a quality car. It handles the road deftly; tucks into corners and is comfortable for travelling long distances.
There are high-tech touches too that give the e-Niro a premium feel. Like the wireless charging pad for your phone. The TomTom Live satnav system is accessed through the 8-inch touchscreen. Not to mention the safety features – such as lane following assist when you’re stuck in traffic – that make driving the e-Niro such a hassle-free experience.
All in all, the e-Niro is an exceptional car at a more-than-reasonable price. And with a 7-year warranty, what further peace of mind do you need to make the switch to electric?
Our three favourite Kia e-Niro features
- The front parking sensors are a bonus in a car that offers such value for money.
- The e-Niro 2 is packed with safety features, like the forward collision-avoidance assist system. This uses the car’s in-built radar and camera to detect potential dangers on the road ahead, and automatically brakes if you don’t react in time.
- Then there are the handy little touches Kia’s thought about – like the small light above the charging port. So you don’t have to scrabble around after dark to set the car up for charging.
You’ll like the Kia e-Niro if you… want the reliability of a 7-year warranty and reassurance of a nearly 300-mile battery range.
