What is a hybrid heating system?

Hybrid heating adds an energy efficient air source heat pump (ASHP) to your existing heating system. Here's why it's worth getting a hybrid heating system:

  • Reduce your dependency on oil or LPG
  • Efficiently heat your home
  • Easy to install & you don't need to overhaul your entire heating system
  • Back up heat if your boiler stops working
  • Reduce your carbon emissions

The experience from start to finish of getting the new system was very smooth. System is extremely efficient, easy to use and will be showing significant savings from our LPG bottles. I definitely recommend others to consider taking up the offer.

Hybrid heat pump system - combining outside air and boiler to heat your home and water - EDF

What's an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps extract heat from the outside air around your home – just like a fridge removes heat from inside itself. This heat is concentrated to a higher temperature by the heat pump and then delivered to your heating system.

The good news is that hybrid air source heat pumps work with your existing oil or LPG boiler. So you don’t have to overhaul your entire heating system.

Reduce the cost of your oil or LPG heating system

A recent government report shows that a hybrid air source heat pump can reduce your boiler usage by up to 80%(1)

That's why we're working with PassivSystems – experts in smart low-carbon home energy services. EDF's hybrid heating solution makes it simple and affordable to reduce dependency on your oil or LPG heating system.

We've created this simple calculator to see your potential savings - you'll get a more accurate view of savings once we have carried out the survey on your home.

Is my home suitable for air source heat pump installation?

Yes, if you:

  • Heat your home using oil, or LPG
  • Own your home and have some outdoor space
  • Have a home internet connection
  • Have a working and serviceable existing heating system
  • Have loft insulation that's a depth of at least 150mm
  • Meet the scheme criteria (our team will talk you through this)

Getting your hybrid heating system

1. Register your interest

Complete our online form and an expert at PassivSystems will call you back

2. Call-back from our team

If you have the following info to hand it will be really helpful

  • How much you pay for your fuel
  • How many litres of oil or LPG do you use a year
  • What is your annual fuel bill

3. Home survey & proposal

A surveyor will visit your home for a no-obligation survey to assess suitability. You'll receive a free Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), and an offer pack if your house is deemed suitable.

4. Installation & registration

An expert installer will install the hybrid heat pump and smart controls – they'll also show you how to use the smart controls. You’ll have to register the system on the government portal for us to receive the government subsidy.

Your questions answered

Who installs my hybrid air source heat pump?

Our partner PassivSystems work with Samsung approved installers to carry out the installation. A standard installation usually takes three days. If you have any specific needs, then our team will discuss these with you. And should you need any additional work, they'll confirm the cost of this before they start.

Will I be without heat during the installation?

Our expert engineers have designed the installation process to minimise any disruption to your heating. So during a standard installation, we’ll probably only need to switch off your boiler for a few hours during the day. If we don’t complete the installation by the end of the day, we’ll turn your boiler back on before we leave, so you’re not without heating at night time.

How do I control my heating?

You manage your heating controls through the PassivLiving portal or using the PassivLiving app on your phone – so you don’t even need to be at home to control your heating. You can create schedules for your heating and change the temperature or modify your settings.

Are there any restrictions on the types of homes that can have a hybrid air source heat pump?

The hybrid heating system can be installed in most homes and works with most heating systems. Find out if your home is suitable by submitting your details in our enquiry form. Bear in mind that if you live in a new build home, you might not be entitled to government paybacks. Visit our Renewable Heat Incentive page to find out more.

The air source heat pump needs to be in reasonable distance of your boiler, with recommendation of no more than 15m of pipework between the heat pump and your boiler to prevent heat loss which will impact the performance and efficiency of the heat pump. We will try and locate the heat pump outside near to an external facing wall closest to your boiler, but it will not be possible if this is near a bedroom window, opening doors or within 1m of your boundary wall. It will need to be on a hard stand and needs enough space around it to allow for a good flow of air. The heat pump cannot be installed in a shed. When we carry out a survey of your home, our team will advise on where best to locate the heat pump.

What happens if I move home?

This works the same as any other renewable system that you have installed where you have an option to either pay the termination fee or the new homeowner will need to take over the contract – but we’ll help you sort this out (this process is known as the ‘transfer of assignment of right contract’).

What happens at the end of the contract?

You have the option to upgrade your heating to a full-electric heat pump solution, or enter into a new contract with us and to continue to use the advanced features of the smart controls.

If you choose not to sign a new contract, you’ll still own the heat pump, but you’ll only have access to basic functions within the smart controls.

Are air source heat pumps noisy?

All heating systems make some noise, but heat pumps can be quieter than traditional old boilers, which use oil or gas. An air-source heat pump can reach 40 to 60 decibels from one metre away, but it all depends on the type of pump and how it’s been installed at your home.

Who can I talk to if I have a technical question?

The tech team at PassivSystems – who work with Samsung to produce the hybrid air source heat pump – are on hand to talk through any technical questions you might have about how the system works or its installation. You can request a call back from them by filling in this form

Who do I contact if I have a complaint?

You can raise your complaint with us by emailing us. We’re also an approved member of Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC), so you can contact them if we’re not able to help.
