When you start the scheme you’ll have a choice of different technical business areas in which to specialise. It could seem overwhelming, but we’ll talk to you before you start and help you decide which one is best suited to your interests and career aspirations. Whatever your decision, as long as you show real commitment and determination, you can be sure you’ll be involved in critical tasks and projects from day one.

Each trainee will undertake different higher education studies aligned to individual specialism and ambitions. So each training scheme varies in length, depending on your needs, the course you choose and the area you work in. Typically, scheme length varies between three and five years, but we’ll consider you to have completed the scheme once your education and experience mean you’re ready to move into a Technical Specialist or Engineer role.

More detail

A Degree Apprenticeship will give you the academic and workplace skills needed for a great career at EDF Energy.

You’ll study a foundation degree initially, with the potential for progression onto a full degree. Whilst on the scheme, you’ll also benefit from plenty of support and real work experience within EDF Energy.

Throughout the scheme, you’ll balance comprehensive training and study whilst taking on a Trainee role. It’s a challenge, but we’ll help and support you in your development and career progression every step of the way – providing you with a structured career path within your chosen area.

Where it could take you

Once you’ve completed the scheme, you’ll be a fully qualified Technical Specialist or Engineer with both academic qualifications and years of experience within EDF Energy. That means you’ll be in the best possible position to continue your career. Your future will be yours for the taking, and because we’ll have helped you map out a structured career path, you’ll know exactly where you’re going and how to get there.

Training and development

In years 1 and 2 you’ll study for a Foundation Degree in Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering dependent on business needs.

You’ll then spend year 3 putting your knowledge into practice at your assigned EDF Energy power station or office.

By year 4, you’ll move into a full time role or go on to complete a full degree in either Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering (dependent on business needs).

You’ll study your qualifications at Bridgwater College. For those based at our Barnwood Office this will be on day release. Whilst for those based at one of our power stations this will be residential for the first year and then set periods of block release in year 2. During your first year of study, you’ll live at our cutting-edge residential training centre Cannington Court. We’ll cover your travel expenses, meals and accommodation whilst you’re there.

As well as all the support you need, you’ll also enjoy plenty of opportunities to get involved in meaningful and challenging work once your studies are underway. But that doesn’t mean you’ll have too much on your plate. Yes, you’ll have to put a lot of work in to manage your studies and your day-to-day duties. But because you’ll be on block release from work when you’re studying, we can make sure we manage your workload accordingly.
