It’s been a while since Britain’s gas and electricity meters had an update. At the moment, most homes and businesses across Britain still have gas and electricity meters that use outdated technology designed decades ago. And they still have meter readings, estimated bills and confusing prices, too.
Smart Meters are changing this.
Gas and electricity suppliers across the country are replacing old meters with Smart Meters that come complete with a SMD (that’s a Smart Meter Display for those not in the know). Consumers will be able to see – practically in real-time – how much energy they’re using in pounds and pence. It will revolutionise how we use energy. We can monitor our energy consumption. We can save money. We can be more efficient. And we now need to recruit a number of Smart Meter installers to help bring this new world to our customers.
Becoming a Smart Meter Operative isn't just about improving our customers' experience, it's also the opportunity for you to learn some new skills to further your career.
Your role will be to safely install, maintain and remove meters in our customers’ homes, all within a specific timescale and whilst adhering to the relevant policies and procedures. Planning your work in advance, we’ll also look to you to help advise our customers on energy efficiency and safety, all whilst delivering an excellent level of customer service.
Capable of working both on your own and as part of a team, you’ll be able to work under pressure, be a good problem solver, and keep health and safety front of mind. An occupational requirement of the role means that you will need to have full colour vision too.
Full training will be provided, details of which you can find below.
To become a qualified electrical smart meter installer, you will need to complete a programme of training at one of our many facilities across London, the South East or South West. Lasting around 45 days, training consists of a combination of classroom, technical workshop and assessment sessions, all delivered by our team of qualified trainers and assessors.
In addition to this, you will also be supported through a number of on-the-job mentoring days with a qualified metering operative, which are woven into your training plan to help optimise your experience with us.
Once the assessment, mentoring and training have been successfully completed, we will then invite you to a series of competency interviews which once passed will leave you ready to work for us as a qualified electrical smart meter installer.
In addition to a competitive salary, generous holiday allowance and annual company bonus when targets are met, we offer our employees a flexible benefits package, allowing you to select a combination of benefits that appeal most to you. Here is an overview of the types of benefits you could receive if you join EDF Energy.
You may choose to incorporate Critical Illness Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance or Travel Insurance as part of your benefits package
You may choose to incorporate Holiday Trading, Payroll Giving or Dining Card benefits as part of your benefits package
You may choose to incorporate Private Healthcare Insurance, Dental Insurance, Health Screening or Healthcare Cash Plan as part of your benefits package
You may choose to incorporate childcare vouchers, retail vouchers or our cycle to work scheme as part of your benefits package
You’ll also be eligible for discounts from a broad range of high street name retailers
We offer a starting salary of £18,833 rising to £20,869 upon completion of your training. We also offer an annual bonus that’s equivalent to 3% of your salary, in recognition of hitting your targets, and an additional monthly performance bonus scheme too.
