Reassurance, assessment, well-being
“I’ve been a first aider at work for 30 years, the last 13 with EDF Energy. I have worked in a variety of departments, mostly in our Doxford office, though I have visited and worked from others. My primary role as a first aider is to preserve life. That’s a bold statement, but it’s fundamental to what we do. It’s our job to reassure and assess a person’s needs and maintain or improve their well-being - which could mean treating an injury.”
Building a picture
“The role also involves meeting people who may need us in the future, such as for epilepsy or diabetes. This way, we can recognise them, and they have the reassurance that we can manage their situation effectively. We just try to build up a picture of how they need to be treated if necessary.”
Sense of achievement
“I’ve always enjoyed the role - to be there when someone needs reassurance and comfort is more rewarding than most things you can do in your life. The camaraderie you can achieve through the role is second to none, and I have made close friends by helping people.
I’m proud I have the ability to help others, and proud that people trust me enough to let me help them. The sense of achievement and life skills gained have helped me develop as a person, and have served me well in all aspects of my life.”

Safety is always our highest priority. We have robust health, safety and wellbeing management systems and a clear companywide governance framework. Zero Harm is embedded in all company processes, including the induction and training of new starters. As part of EDF Energy’s commitment to skills
development for young people, we take on around 60 graduates each year across nine different schemes.
“During the graduate scheme I’ve moved between stations and sites and worked with various departments. I enjoy the variety involved in the graduate scheme. It provides a wonderful opportunity to learn, whether you’re out on plant or receiving technical training at Barnwood. “During my attachments so far, I’ve seen how safety is the key priority no matter what the task is that is being performed. I’ve been impressed by the commitment shown to continual monitoring of safety precautions.”

We believe all harm is preventable, so our aim is Zero Harm. That means providing healthy workplaces that are safe for all, focusing strongly on wellbeing, and taking action to make sure the public is not harmed by our operations. In 2015, we launched the Life-Saving Rules: Group-wide
safety precautions aimed at preserving life. The rules formalise the steps we already take every day, setting them out in a simple, consistent way to give our policies more impact.
“My role involves keeping Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) documentation updated, site visits, toolbox talks and site inspections. These activities support the objectives of the wider HS&E team, which are to provide people with the tools and environment to stay safe and healthy. We have a moral
duty of care of all employees. “Perhaps the most enjoyable part of my role is the job satisfaction I get at the end of each day in the knowledge all my endeavours contribute to our collective aim of Zero Harm.”
