BITC Responsible Business of the Year Awards 2016

EDF Energy were recognised as finalists for Responsible Business of the Year, acknowledging our sustainability work and leadership in decarbonising the British electricity sector. Business in the Community’s Responsible Business Awards independently recognise and showcase companies that have had a positive impact on the environment, on society, and their people. 

We are also a finalist in The Education category for The Big Energy Project, and received shortlisted status for two additional awards, including Environmental Leadership (for our work to tackle the skills shortage in low-carbon) and Excluded Groups for our Steps into Work programme which is designed to help adults with disabilities enter long-term employment.

 

Race for Opportunity 20th Anniversary Awards Finalists 2015

The Race for Opportunity (RfO) 20th Anniversary Awards Dinner took place at the prestigious Hilton Park Lane Hotel, London on Tuesday 6 October, where our Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Employee Network entered two categories earlier this year:

  • Employee Network (Private Sector) - For any organisation with a race or cultural diversity employee network group.

  • Champion & Executive Sponsor Award (Neale Brittain, Head of Fleet Critical Programmes) - For one or more individual, demonstrating significant leadership within the workplace, in order to progress the race equality, diversity and inclusion agenda.  

The BAME Network were up against stiff competition from large organisations, but were extremely proud to be finalists in both categories.   The Race for Opportunity Awards celebrate outstanding practice, innovation and dedication to race equality and inclusion in UK workplaces and profile UK businesses that are leading the way in unlocking the talent potential and business opportunity of having a diverse workforce.

Business in the Community (BITC) Responsible Business Awards 2015

We were awarded three Big Tick reaccreditation awards by Business in the Community (BITC) in their 2015 Responsible Business Awards. A BITC ‘Big Tick’ is awarded to companies who have demonstrated significant achievement in their responsible business programmes.

Education - for our partnership with Okehampton College in Devon to provide energy efficiency services, which has saved the college up to £100,000 each year and increased interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at the college.

Workwell - for our employee ‘wellbeing’ strategy, which among other benefits has seen a 17% reduction in primarily work-related ill health cases.

Engaging Customers in Sustainability - for our sustainable schools programme the Pod (www.jointhepod.org) which has engaged more than 10 million children in energy, science and sustainability since 2008.

Winner - Energy Provider of the Year 2014 - Consumer Moneyfacts Awards 2015 

We achieved the highest residential customer satisfaction score for an energy supplier in the January 2015 UK Customer Satisfaction Index (UKCSI) – moving up from third place in January 2014 and beating the other major suppliers and First Utility, who were included in the survey for the first time.

Gender European Equality Standard 2014

EDF Energy achieved a level two rating (out of three levels, the third being the highest) in the Gender European Equality Standard(GEES) assessment by NGO Aborus. The standard looks at a set of nine different criteria including areas such as Training and Development, Career Progression and Healthy Work-Life Balance. The goal of this GEES process is to contribute to the creation of a European common culture of gender equality in the workplace.

EDF Energy was named Supplier of the Year – Industrial and Commercial - 2014 Energy Awards

The Awards recognise success in the energy sector, with this category looking across a wide range of issues involving customer service, innovation and energy service offerings. Our entry for the 3D’s of Energy campaign, focussed on how we are helping mid-market customers understand what impact non-energy costs have on their contract (Discover), decide which elements of the contract they want to fix (Determine) and to choose the contract that’s best for them (Decide).   The judges commented that in an increasingly complex energy world, our emphasis on transparency and simplicity should be commended – another demonstration of how we’re delivering on our B2B ambition to Lead on Trust.

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Recruitment Marketing Awards 2014

In collaboration with Thirty Three, we won the CIPD ‘Best Diversity Initiative’ Award in the 2014 Recruitment Marketing Awards. The award was presented to us for our work to build awareness of our commitment to Diversity and Inclusion and the work we do to build a truly inclusive working environment.

Winner - Electricity Industry Sector Award - Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) 2014 Awards

We won the Electricity Industry Sector Award in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards. The prestigious annual scheme is run by RoSPA whose mission is to save lives and reduce injuries. The awards recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work.

We were awarded seven ‘Big Tick’ Awards by Business in the Community (BITC) in their 2014 Responsible Business Awards in the following categories. This included being a finalist for BITC’s top award of ‘Responsible Business of the Year’. A BITC ‘Big Tick’ is awarded to companies who have demonstrated significant achievement in their responsible business programmes.

Responsible Business of the Year - for our journey towards a low carbon economy and our sustainable and responsible approach to business. 2013 saw EDF Energy and the UK Government reach an historic agreement to help unlock new low-carbon nuclear investment in the UK.

Building Stronger Communities - for our with Plymouth Citizen’s Advice Bureau in Devon to provide a broad debt management service for communities. This service has now been rolled out nationwide.

Regional Winner – Collaborative Action - BITC Local Impact Awards 2014

Our long-standing partnership with the Cheltenham Festivals to engage young people in science and engineering won Business in the Community’s South West Collaborative Action Award in 2014. The programme aims to inspire young people in science and engineering and increase uptake of STEM subjects with young people.

Regional Winner - Employee Volunteering of the Year - BITC Local Impact Awards 2014

Margaret Wenham, Channel Management Advisor with EDF Energy in Doxford, was awarded the North East Local Impact Award for her extensive volunteering work in this year’s Business in the Community Awards.

Winner - Energy Provider of the Year 2014 - Consumer Moneyfacts Awards 2014

We were named as ‘Energy Provider of the Year 2014’ at the Consumer Moneyfacts Awards 2014, an award scheme that uses feedback from more than 90,000 consumer surveys to select its winners. The Consumer Moneyfacts Awards showcase companies which provide not only good customer service, demonstrated by feedback from thousands of consumer surveys, but the best products on the market. Our ‘Blue’ tariffs, which offer customers fixed energy prices and no exit fees, have seen more than two million customer accounts sign up to them since their launch in April 2012.

Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark for Dungeness B - 2013

Operating of Dungeness B power station, we received the Wildlife Trusts’ certification in recognition of its work to protect the unique flora and fauna of the vegetated shingle surrounding the Kent power station. The Biodiversity Benchmark Award enables organisations across the UK to assess the standard of their conservation management, improve their environmental management procedures and demonstrate their commitment to enhancing the nature in support of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP).

Winner - Employee Network Award - Race for Opportunity’ Award 2013

Our Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Employee Natework was recognised as a leader in developing diverse workforces after winning the Employee Network Award at the 2013 Race for Opportunity Awards Gala Dinner. Race for Opportunity (RfO) is the race equality campaign from Business in the Community, a charity dedicated to promoting responsible business and corporate social responsibility. Race for Opportunity’s eight awards celebrate private and public sector organisations that are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and are demonstrating tangible results.

Winner - Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion Award, Private Sector category 2013

We were awarded the 2013 private sector category at the Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion (ENEI) Awards, which followed our achievement of 'Gold Standard' for Diversity & Inclusion in 2012. ENEI also awarded us the Tapping into Talent Award for the pilot Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Mentoring Scheme and the Inclusive Procurement Award for our Supplier Diversity programme. These awards recognise the work we have done and continue to do to create an inclusive environment across the company.

Winner - Environmental Leadership for Behavioural Change - national Environment and Energy Awards 2013

This award recognised our commitment to improve our environmental responsibility and impact by engaging all of our employees on our sustainability journey through Our Ambitions.

Our approach towards engaging our people starts at the very top with our CEO and his executive team and is embedded into many day-to-day processes throughout the company.  There are robust governance structures in place which are linked to individual and team performance, demonstrating clear leadership.  We also have a range of internal and external programmes reinforcing behavioural change across the company.

Winner - TVE Global Sustainability Film Awards 2013

The Pod, our programme for sustainable schools is an educational resource of choice for schools across the UK and beyond. The Pod is a free online resource for teachers and young people aimed at both primary and secondary school levels. It helps pupils learn about environmental issues, take action to address them, and then inspire others to do the same. The Pod helps young people understand and tackle issues such as energy, biodiversity, waste and transport. The programme has reached 10 million children in the UK and around the world since its launch in 2008. The programme is run in partnership with Eco-Schools, one of the largest environmental education projects in the world.

Finalist - Inspiring Social Action - BITC Awards 2013

In partnership with Envision, we developed the Legacy Champion programme to engage directly through mentoring activities with young people in the London Olympic boroughs to help and support them in making real social impact in their communities. Since 2010, the programme has raised awareness of sustainability and community issues with 16-19 year-olds and helped young people in host boroughs to identify, manage and realise 15 social action projects based on the community issues that matter most to them.

Regional Winner - Employee Volunteering of the Year - BITC Local Impact Awards 2013

Simon Round, training team manager with EDF Energy in Doxford, was awarded the regional BITC (Business in the Community) Local Impact Award for his extraordinary journey of sports event volunteering with more than 60 events since 2008. Through his volunteering, Simon has proven to be a role model for all our employees and a champion for our Sustainability Commitments.

Platinum Big Tick - BITC Corporate Responsibility Index 2013

We were awarded a Platinum Big Tick with an overall score of 95%, placing us best in our sector. The Corporate Responsiblity Index (CRI) follows a systematic approach to managing, measuring and reporting on responsible business practices. Big Tick - Building Stronger Communities - BITC Awards (Reaccreditation) 2013

Following on from being recognised as 'Community Initiative of the Year' at the 2010 Utility Industry Achievement Awards, our three-year partnership with Plymouth Citizen’s Advice Bureau was announced as the Winner of Jaguar Land Rover Building Stronger Communities Award for Excellence in the 2012 Business in the Community (BITC) Awards. In 2013, EDF Energy's continued commitment was once again recognised, earning a 2013 National Big Tick Award through a rigorous process called 'reaccreditation'.

This award recognised our sector-first Energy Advice Development Project with Plymouth Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), helping local people overcome fuel debt. In June 2011, this became a dedicated independent debt advice service available free for all our consumers, helping more than 8,200 EDF Energy customers in 2012.

Big Tick - Environmental Leadership - BITC Awards (Reaccreditation) 2013

We were awarded the Asda Environmental Leadership Award at the 2012 Business in the Community (BITC) Awards.

This prestigious national award recognises 'leadership in environmental sustainability'. For us, leadership means leading by example and going far beyond any requirements imposed by Government or the energy regulator. In 2012 and 2013, the company’s continued commitment was once again recognised, earning a 2013 National Big Tick Award through a rigorous process called 'reaccreditation'.

Winner - Diversity Works for London Gold Standard 2012

In November 2012, we were awarded the Diversity Works for London Gold Standard in recognition of our equality, diversity and inclusion practices. We joined BT, the London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as one of just four organisations with this leading nationwide standard.

Diversity Works for London is a Mayoral programme that encourages and supports businesses to realise the benefits of diversity. Through a comprehensive suite of tailored business support products, the programme enables companies to improve performance through diversity.
