The Environment: Waste

During 2004, we appointed a new waste management contractor to cover all of EDF Energy's activities. This will enable us to accurately monitor waste generation and to reduce the waste we send to landfill.

However, the sheer scale of the EDF Energy business has meant the roll-out of the single waste management contract has taken longer than expected. Waste collection systems are in place, but the recycling and waste monitoring systems have taken longer. As a consequence, we do not have reliable waste or recycling figures for 2004. The challenge during 2005 is to ensure that these gaps are filled.

A company-wide recycling initiative will be launched during 2005 with the aim of greatly increasing recycling at all sites, which will help us meet our target of exceeding the UK industry average for recycling, currently 54%.
