We believe that the service we provide is fundamentally beneficial to society. Nevertheless we have a duty to deliver that service in a way that is mindful of the wider consequences. Our operations have the potential to negatively impact on our employees, on society and on the environment, and we have developed policies and practices that aim to minimise these impacts.
These wider responsibilities are often described under the term Corporate Responsibility (CR).
During 2005, the internal mechanisms for driving CR will be developed. A Corporate Responsibility Strategy Group (CRSG) will be formed, comprising senior managers from across the company. This group will investigate key CR issues and will develop appropriate responses. The group’s activities will be overseen by a Corporate Responsibility Steering Committee (CRSC), which consists of a specially convened sitting of the company's Executive Committee (EC).
One early output of the CRSG was the overarching CR policy, which can be downloaded here [PDF].”

During 2004 we completed and, for the first time, publicly participated in the BitC CR Index. The Index measures companies' performance against a generic set of CR measures. Our performance in the CR Index provides us with an overall measure of performance on CR issues, and is tied into the company’s staff incentive scheme.
We were pleased with our score of 87% (up from our 2003 shadow submission score of 75%) and our overall position of =46th, but our position of 10th out of 11 companies in our sector, albeit a competitive sector, indicates that there is more to be done.
The result confirmed our belief that many areas of CR performance within EDF Energy are excellent. Indeed our 'Environmental Management' and 'Marketplace Management' were described as 'outstanding'. This is particularly important given our significant potential impacts in these areas. The feedback indicated a number of areas in which we have room for improvement.
Specific actions to address these shortcomings have been incorporated into company-level and branch-level action plans and completion of the actions forms part of the company employee incentive scheme.
