Performance Report 2004
Ambition 1: Customers

Our Network

EDF Energy is the largest electricity distribution company in the UK. We own and operate three distribution networks: EPN, covering eastern counties, SPN, covering the south east, and LPN, covering London. Our 'patch' extends from the north Norfolk coast to Littlehampton in Sussex and our networks serve eight million customer addresses, representing 40% of the UK's GDP. Over 20 million citizens rely on us for the essential life-serving product that is electricity.

In total, we maintain 48,000 km of overhead lines and 138,000 km of underground cables.

With so many people and businesses reliant on our networks, the reliability of our infrastructure is extremely important. We measure the performance of our networks using two measures, Customer Minutes Lost and Customer Interruptions:

During 2004, the performance of our eastern and southern networks improved considerably over both measures, while the performance of our central network remained stable. Generally, our central network is more reliable as 99% of the network in London is underground. In 2004 we invested £308 million in upgrading our networks. This sum will rise to around £390 million in 2005.

In 2004, the final proposal under the Distribution Price Control Review ('DPCR') was agreed with Ofgem. This was an extremely important process for EDF Energy.

We have undertaken to improve the quality of our response to network emergencies.
