Performance Report 2004
Ambition 1: Customers

Residential Customers: Service Reliability

The reliability of electricity supply is dependent on the integrity of the distribution network. In London and the south east of England, our customers are connected to our own networks. In other areas, including the south west of England, our customers are reliant on the networks operated by other companies. In the eastern counties, our network distributes electricity on behalf of other suppliers.

With around 40% of the UK's GDP reliant on our 186,000 km of cables and wires, ensuring a high level of network reliability is extremely important.

We measure the performance of our networks using two measures:

Both measures show improved performance during 2004. Our central network covers London and has a much higher level of performance, as much of the network is underground. We are confident that we will meet the targets set for us by Ofgem.

We also responded strongly to storms that caused power cuts in January, June and July. The way in which we have developed a more robust response to emergenciesis covered here.
