Climate change is a reality and we can no longer avoid the fact that the way we run our businesses has a direct impact on the planet.
By simply turning on a computer, we release more CO2 into the atmosphere. CO2 is the principle greenhouse gas and greenhouse gases are believed to be one of the principle causes of climate change.
While it is essential to combat climate change, we understand that you still need to use energy to stay in business. That is why we have launched our Climate Balance for Business Scheme – an initiative that enables you to help balance your business energy consumption by supporting a range of sustainable energy projects.

How the Climate Balance for Business Scheme works
To participate in the Climate Balance for Business Scheme, you make a contribution of 0.42p (including VAT) per unit of electricity on top of the standard unit price. We will use your contribution to help fund global and local projects that are making a sustainable difference to the environment and benefiting communities.
You can only take part in our Climate Balance for Business Scheme if you switch to our Climate Balance Tariff and agree to the Scheme’s qualifying terms and conditions. You can also ask for a copy of these terms and conditions by calling free on 0800 904 7458†.
EDF Energy will invest in projects designed to help balance the CO2 emissions associated with each kWh of electricity supplied to Climate Balance customers based on the following conversion factor: 0.527kg per kWh of electricity supplied.
CO2 emissions will be balanced on an aggregate basis for all Climate Balance customers through projects funded by this central fund.
The required level of CO2 reductions will be achieved over the lifetime of these projects, and may differ from project to project.
We currently fund two types of projects:
- Energy efficiency projects which strive to cut CO2 emissions by reducing the amount of fuel needed. Examples include a project promoting the use of energy-efficient cooking stoves in Bangladesh
- Reforestation projects involved in planting tress throughout the UK and abroad help to offset CO2 emissions. Examples include restoring rainforests in south-western Uganda. This work is not only helping to cut CO2 emissions, but it is also creating jobs for local communities while working towards a sustainable timber industry
Calculate your business energy emissions
The first step to lowering your CO2 emissions created from business energy usage is to know how much energy your business uses.
All sorts of things affect your usage, from the type of property, the heating system you use, how many computers you use and how many employees you have.
The CO2 calculator will help you work out exactly how much energy your business uses in its daily activities.
