New electricity supply connections
Arranging a new electricity supply connection needn’t be difficult. That’s why we’ve included a simple guide below to help you understand your role in the process.
Who does what?
There are four main parties in the electricity connections process (see diagram below). In order for your site to be supplied on time, it’s important for you to understand how these parties cooperate together when arranging your electricity supply connection.

We think your role is probably the most important in the electricity supply connections process. It’s important that you understand what you have to do and in what order, so that the remaining parties can connect your supply correctly and on time.
Step 1: Agree an Available Capacity (kVA) with your Network Operator
You will need to contact your Network Operator to organise your new electricity infrastructure and to sign an Available Capacity Agreement (for large connections). Once this has been completed, your Network Operator should then issue you with a Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) for your new supply.
Step 2: Sign a metering contract with your chosen Meter Operator
The metering industry is an open competitive market, and you can now choose your own Meter Operator. Once you have signed your metering contract, we will then be able to instruct them to carry out the appropriate meter installations for your new electricity connection. This is especially important if you require half-hourly metering, as it requires a connection to a telephone line to pass meter consumption data.
If you’d like EDF Energy Customer Field Services to be your Meter Operator, please phone 0208 298 8005.
Step 3: Instruct a supplier to complete the process
If you’ve completed steps 1 and 2, you’ve done the hard part. If not, please go back and complete steps 1 and 2 before completing step 3.
If you’d like EDF Energy to be your electricity supplier, please download and complete our New Connections form. This will enable us to do the following:
- Register your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) – this will take 5-10 working days
- Contact your Meter Operator to arrange an appropriate appointment date for your meter installation
Please note: Meter Operators require a minimum of 20 working days notice, depending on availability.

Disconnection services
There may come a time when you need to disconnect the electricity supply to your premise(s) – we can help to make this process as hassle-free as possible.
The disconnection process needn’t be complicated. If you require a disconnection to be carried out, simply complete our Termination of supply form. This will allow us to:
- Review and action your request more swiftly
- Ensure that we capture all the relevant information from the outset
Should we need additional information from you, one of our dedicated team members will contact you directly.

Please note that this is a permanent procedure. If the supply needs to be subsequently reconnected, a charge may be payable, as it will be treated as a new connection.
Under what circumstances is a disconnection typically required?
A disconnection will usually be required in cases where:
- it is necessary to remove redundant cables on a premise
- the building on the premise in question is to be demolished
However, there may be other exceptional circumstances which require a disconnection to be carried out.
