Want to help combat climate change? Look no further than our Climate Balance tariff – the affordable way to buy energy and help balance its impact on our planet.
Our Climate Balance tariff helps you to lessen the impact of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced by the energy you use at home.
By paying a little extra for every unit of energy you use, this contributes to our global projects that are designed to help reduce energy use and CO2 emissions. Through our partner, The CarbonNeutral Company, this extra money is used to purchase carbon credits* in energy efficiency and carbon balancing projects around the world.
We know that it’s not easy being green. Every time we switch on a light, run a wash or cook a meal we all affect the earth because the energy we use is generated in ways that produce carbon dioxide (CO2) – now widely believed to be a main contributor to climate change.
Climate Balance is your chance to make a difference and you are doing your bit to combat climate change around the world.

What’s your energy carbon footprint?
Your carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released every year from the energy produced for you to use at home. Everything you do at home that involves the use of fossil fuels like coal, gas or oil – turning on a light, boiling a kettle or cooking a meal – has a carbon cost.
Our carbon footprint calculator lets you work out the cost attached to the energy you use at home.
Calculate your household CO2 emissions
*Carbon credits is the standard currency of carbon offset – a carbon credit is equal to a tonne of CO2.
Here are some of the initiatives that you could be contributing towards:
Te Apiti Wind Power Generation
This project aims to provide an alternative to non-sustainable power sources in New Zealand. It will offset approximately 100,000t/CO2 annually.
Guizhou Hydro Power Project
This renewable energy project sees the construction of a number of small and medium hydro power stations in Guizhou Province, Northern China. By providing renewable energy, the project will displace electricity generated by fossil fuel power plants. The project will generate emission reductions of an estimated 190,000 tCO2.
Tirunelveli Wind Based Power Generation Project
Based in Tamil Nadu, India, this project aims to generate clean electricity with zero project emissions by harnessing wind power. The wind farm has a gross generation capacity of 9.92 mega-watt (MW).
What Climate Balance costs
The cost of Climate Balance depends on how much energy you use. A typical customer can expect to pay:
- £14.21 extra a year (including VAT) for electricity – based on a premium of 0.43p for every unit of energy used
- £33.36 extra a year (including VAT) for gas – based on a premium 0.163p for every unit of energy used
That’s around £48 extra a year (including VAT) for a Dual Fuel customer – a little bit more to pay yes, but for a tariff that could make a very big difference for you and your family’s future.
What Climate Balance covers
Our Climate Balance tariff is a great way to help balance the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with the gas and electricity you use at home, but it doesn’t cover other carbon ‘costs’ such as car use or air travel.
Climate Balance Tariff Rules
NOTE: QUALIFYING CONDITIONS FOR CLIMATE BALANCE TARIFF
- Your participation in the Climate Balance Scheme is subject to you either transferring from your existing energy supplier to the EDF Energy Climate Balance Tariff or confirming to EDF Energy that you wish to transfer from your existing EDF Energy tariff onto the Climate Balance Tariff.
- The Climate Balance charges and tariffs are only available for the supply of gas and electricity to a private dwelling used exclusively or mainly for domestic purposes.
- The exact amount of CO2 emissions connected with the generation of the gas and electricity supplied to your premises depend on a variety of factors e.g. the source of generation. For the purposes of this Climate Balance scheme all calculations in relation to CO2 emission volumes, will be based on the following principles: -
(1) That 0.540kg of CO2 is emitted for every kWh of electricity you use and
(2) That 0.206kg of CO2 is emitted for every kWh of gas you use, i.e. an average household consuming on average 3,300kWh of electricity and 20,500kWh of gas per year will result in total CO2 emissions of 6 tonnes in relation to the generation of such energy.
EDF Energy at its sole discretion may review and amend these principles from time to time and any such amendments will be communicated to Climate Balance customers
- Initially, under the Climate Balance Tariff you will pay 0.43p/kWh (inc VAT) extra for electricity and 0.163p/kWh (inc VAT) extra for gas compared with the equivalent qualifying EDF Energy standard tariff ("Climate Balance Contribution"). Please note that not all tariffs qualify to be upgraded to a Climate Balance version (e.g. Certain Prepayment tariffs and complex configuration/multi-rate tariffs are not compatible with Climate Balance). Customers on non qualifying tariffs must first switch to a qualifying standard tariff (and this may require a meter change) before upgrading to Climate Balance. Please call 0800 096 9000* for further details if are not sure whether your existing tariff is a standard tariff. Once you have applied for Climate Balance, we will write to you to let you know if your existing tariff arrangement is not compatible with a Climate Balance tariff version.
- The Climate Balance Contributions per kWh from all Climate Balance Scheme customers will be put into a central fund managed by EDF Energy. EDF Energy will invest proceeds from such fund into a portfolio of global projects that are aimed at reducing/absorbing CO2. These projects will include technology based to reforestation projects, and EDF Energy will ensure that the level of investment made is sufficient to support projects that will as a minimum reduce/absorb an annual volume of CO2 that is no less than the total annual volume of CO2 emissions associated with the gas and electricity supplied to all EDF Energy Climate Balance Customers during the relevant year. The total energy consumption of all Climate Balance customers will be reviewed on a quarterly basis in line with actual/estimated consumption data from EDF Energy's billing systems and Project investment decisions will then be taken accordingly.
- EDF Energy reserves the right to withdraw this Climate Balance scheme at any time, should circumstances arise which means it is no longer feasible or appropriate to continue. In such circumstances, customers participating in the scheme will be transferred back onto the standard version of the equivalent Climate Balance tariff and any funds remaining within the Climate Balance fund will be utilised in supporting CO2 emission reduction or other appropriate environmental projects.
- Participation in the Climate Balance scheme is strictly subject to these terms and the terms of EDF Energy’s energy supply contract. Please do not seek to participate if you do not wish to accept any of these terms.
