You can improve your energy efficiency at home by using the heating controls and timers fitted onto your heating appliances more effectively and by fitting low cost electronic and mechanical timers yourself.

How it works

Using the controls on your electric heating devices helps you to adjust temperatures to suit your needs. In addition to time and temperature controls, you’ll also need charge controls on any storage heating systems you have. The following may already be fitted  or can be fitted to each heater or installed independently to control several at once:

  • Manual control – adjusted to set heating requirements for the next day
  • Automatic control – to detect temperature fall at night and adjust the charge accordingly
  • Weather sensing control – reacts to weather variations to meet heating requirements for the day

Many direct heating devices also provide the following controls or can be fitted with them:

  • Thermostat – to prevent overheating if run for a long time
  • Time switch – to pre-set heating times
  • Central programmer – providing time and temperature control over two or more space heating areas

How it is installed

While some whole house electric heating controls can be installed as a DIY job, others must be carried out by a registered, qualified installer.
