In the UK, domestic hot water has traditionally been heated and stored in upright copper cylinders. Other storage vessels are available, but this is by far the most popular method.
How it works
The cylinders are available both for vented and unvented systems. A vented system is one where the pressure is limited by a supply cistern, usually installed in the loft. An unvented system is connected directly to the incoming water supply. In each case, electrical immersion heaters are installed horizontally (preferred mounting) or vertically. To take advantage of cheaper off-peak rates, twin immersion heaters or dual element single immersion heaters can be installed and connected. This ensures that a small quantity of hot water at the top of the vessel is always available, as this is heated at the normal electricity rate. But the larger volume (for baths, for example) is heated by the immersion heater during off-peak periods to save costs.
How it is installed
Electric hot water installations must be carried out by a registered, qualified installer.
