Fitting a boiler or stove that uses biomass, wood logs or wood chips instead of conventional fuels can be a cost effective way to heat your home.

How it works

Biomass – sometimes referred to as bio fuels or bio energy – is made directly from plants, or as a by-product of industrial, commercial, domestic and agricultural processes. Most domestic systems use wood logs or wood chips. A biomass/wood chip boiler can provide space heating, while an independent wood burning stove can heat a room, and even provide water heating by using a back-burner.

How it’s installed

Biomass/wood chip boilers or wood burning stoves should be installed by an accredited professional. Before you install either, you should consider a number of factors.

  • Specifically designed ventilation is required when using wood fuel appliances.
  • Space is required to store fuel.
  • Installation must comply with stringent safety and building regulations.
